Johannesburg - A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, Mtati Tana, said on Sunday that 92 people had been arrested in East London over the weekend for crimes related to drug and alcohol abuse.

He said among those arrested were 10 drunken drivers and three others for dealing in crack cocaine.

Police concentrated on liquor outlets and searched suspicious people and vehicles at check points.

Crack and powdered cocaine, tik tablets, six bompies of dagga and more than 25 litres of alcohol were found on some of the people arrested.

Police also confiscated 20 knives, a stolen laptop, six cellphones, a wallet with R2 710, 40 fake DVD's and an electrical generator.

Tana said: "We will continue throughout the festive season to keep communities safe from crime."

awesome work we could've been in trouble if that electrical generator and wallet stayed in the public domain. Combine that with a cellphone and they could have phoned other people which would have been unacceptable.

    anc land

      Robbie - 2011-12-04 14:46

You are quite correct Ian, well done for spotting that, but if it was DA land they would of at least found guns, rapists and murderers and not a F__king generator.

      Grant - 2011-12-04 15:11

Robbie - you are an @rse. It is not improbable that someone was murdered/stabbed/beaten up in the course of the generator being stolen and that in part of the process of recovering the generator, they now have the perp in custody and he is off the street!!!

Arresting people who use or abuse drugs is akin to blaming rape victims for being attacked. Find those who are dealing/selling drugs and create a legal charge for attempted murder. This will raise the standard to protect the people and lower the will for those who might considered this a future profession. Safer streets equals safer people.
