King William's Town - A police constable will appear in the Sterkspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder of two of his colleagues.

The 42-year-old suspect, who is attached to the Sterkspruit police, was arrested after a shooting claimed the life of two officers on Tuesday at about 23:00, police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci confirmed in a statement.

All three were off duty when the incident occurred.

“The suspect and [the surviving] constable had an argument at their place of residence. This resulted in the suspect assaulting [the constable] and the deceased intervened and tried to stop the fight," Soci said.

“The suspect [allegedly] took out his firearm and fatally wounded the deceased and shot [the other] constable in the lower body.”

The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment and was discharged from hospital on Friday.

Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened and are currently being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
