Johannesburg - A manhunt has been launched after an inmate escaped from Atteridgeville prison in Pretoria on Wednesday morning, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that at about 11:30 prisoners were on the sports field doing sporting activities when a 29-year-old offender escaped," spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said.

"He was dressed in his prison uniform and it is unclear what the circumstances were at the time of his escape."

Police, as well as other law enforcement agencies, took part in the search, but the escapee has yet to be arrested.

He was serving a four-year sentence for vehicle theft.

"A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened at Pretoria Central SAPS for further police investigation," Moloto said.
