Johannesburg - Police shot dead a Soweto man who kidnapped and raped a woman after she saw him trying to rob a man.

The 31-year-old died in a shoot-out with police in Kliptown, Soweto, on Tuesday morning, police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said.

On Monday night, he shot and wounded another man while trying to rob him on a street in the area. A 24-year-old woman saw this and screamed for help.

He grabbed her and forced her back to his shack, where he raped her.

She escaped in the morning, contacted police and led them back to the man's home.
