Johannesburg - A police squad and two reservists mistakenly shot and killed a Sandton cop's wife, and shot and injured three people during a botched chase down at Phomolong in Thembisa on Friday night.

The woman was shot dead in her car and her two passengers were injured, while a third person in a nearby house was hit by a stray bullet, said Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Grace Langa.

The police and reservists were under the impression they were chasing suspects, but details surrounding the matter were sketchy.

She said three cars carrying five policeman, three in a police patrol vehicle, two in a BMW and two police reservists in a VW Micro-bus were following a vehicle matching the victims' car.

"The deceased was coming from Alexandra carrying three of her family members. When she parked the car in Phomolong, to drop of her male cousin, the police and reservist shot at the car.

"The three cars fired shots at the car and the woman was killed with two people in the car injured.

"One of the stray bullets hit a nearby house injuring the owner. The policeman said this was a case of mistaken identity as they were chasing a suspects car matching that description," said Langa.

Langa said IPID were waiting for the ballistics report and the results of a post-mortem before any arrest could be made.

Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened.
