Durban - A manhunt is underway after a Durban woman and her nephew died when acid was thrown on them while they were sleeping.

KwaZulu-Natal police said Ntokozo Sobahle Nzuza, 34, and her 4-year-old nephew Mlungisi Ngongoma were attacked by an unknown suspect on July 30.

They were sleeping in an apartment along Mansel Road, just off Umgeni Road in Durban at the time, spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

They sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

"Nzuza died in hospital last month and Mlungisi died two days ago," Zwane said.

A double murder docket was opened.

Zwane appealed to the public to assist police in solving the case. Those who could shed light on the incident and assist in bringing perpetrators to book were urged to contact the Durban Central police.
