Johannesburg - Police were on Monday searching for four men who robbed three people in a car on the M2 highway on-ramp in Crown Mines, after a video capturing the incident was circulated online.

"It alleged that as the three men in their vehicle were driving in an easterly direction, suddenly another vehicle stopped abruptly in front of them," Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said in a statement.

"Four armed suspects got out and pointed at them with firearms. Three iPhones and cash were taken from the victims. The suspects fired shots before speeding off. No one was injured and a case of armed robbery has been opened with Johannesburg central police for investigation."

According to police it happened shortly after 13:00 on Saturday.

A video of the Saturday afternoon attack was recorded by a dashboard-mounted camera in the victims' car. It was posted on the Facebook account of Anton Koen.

Koen wrote: "ROBBERY 30.05.2015. Abt 16h45. Makro on ramp. Fordsburg. Suspects robbing a motorist.

PLEASE CIRCULATE AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. Lets get their faces out their [sic] so the police can either catch or hopefully kill them."

The pictures had been shared over 31 900 times by 18:00 on Monday.

The attackers were travelling in a white VW Jetta TSI with number plates DL 65 CL GP.

Shortly after getting onto the on-ramp off Main Reef Road onto the M2 East, the Jetta stops, forcing the driver of the victims' car to brake.

Four men, all armed, leap from the Jetta and disappear off camera to the side of the victims' car. One of the robbers, wearing a purple T-shirt, a cap and gloves, gestures at motorists and appears to force them to stop.
