Johannesburg - Police have called for information relating to the death of a Midrand student, police said on Friday.

Philasande Ngum, 19, was found dead in the veld in President Park, Midrand, on Wednesday.

"The body was already in a state of decomposition when it was found [around noon]," said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

"Forensic investigations are underway to establish all the circumstances that led to her death."

She was last seen alive at a Midrand shopping mall on 3 May.

Later, her mother received a call from a man demanding R1 500 ransom money, which she paid into her daughter's account.

It was believed that Ngum was killed where her body was found, Dlamini said.
