Police shoot man slaughtering cow

2012-08-06 14:37

East London - Eastern Cape police have shot dead a man in Tsolo when a group of people tried to slaughter a cow that had been hit by a car.

The driver reported Sunday's accident to the police, who arrived and found residents slaughtering the animal, which was still alive, spokesperson Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said on Monday.

Violence erupted when residents were told to stop what they were doing as it amounted to stock theft.

"Police fired two warning shots and a man was fatally wounded. Another one was shot in the hand."

A group of angry residents marched to the police station, accusing the police of murder.

On Monday morning, part of the R396 between Tsolo and Maclear was barricaded with stones and other objects.

"They just barricaded the road and left," Fatyela said.

Motorists were advised to avoid the road until it was cleared. A murder and attempted murder docket had been opened.

"Police fired two warning shots and a man was fatally wounded. Another one was shot in the hand." great warning shot that... wtf...

      patson.nedzamba - 2012-08-06 15:15

The first shot was aimed at the target while the second was the warning one

      rontheogre - 2012-08-06 16:47

Did you miss the article about the SAPS firearm competency?

  • keith.recore - 2012-08-06 14:56

basic policing 101, you do not fire warning shots, when you fire your gun it is w/ the intent to kill. Laps in training here for sure.

  • terrence.zulu.9 - 2012-08-06 14:58

there is something wrong with SAPS.the govmnt need to reconsider whether they really need to be armed.they abusing the power to be equiped with guns.they must be armed with sjambok like Zimbabwe force.

      Veronica.Swart.King - 2012-08-06 15:04

Yes that sounds like a brilliant idea, let's arm our police force with sjamboks but let's also make sure that they are closely related to Chuck Norris so that they will be able to whip the bullets being shot at them away! What the hell???

  • veritas.odium.paret - 2012-08-06 15:02

I always thought 'warning shots' meant aiming the gun upwards and shooting into the sky...

      Lacrimose - 2012-08-06 15:08

Yes but that doesn't mean the bullets stay up in the sky :)

      Matthew - 2012-08-06 15:12

Thats because, thats how it is SUPPOSED to be done. Fired warning shots INTO the man =/ this cop dosnt deserve to wear a badge

      farmfreund - 2012-08-06 15:14

Good one, in SA the police cant shoot they are so use to missing that they piont the gun at you, i am sure these guys run into the bullets

      veritas.odium.paret - 2012-08-06 15:49

But lacrimose, are you saying a few grams bullet fired without any horizontal component and falling under the effect of gravity has a potential to kill (assuming it doenst land in someone's open mouth and choke them)?

      mack.myburgh - 2012-08-06 15:54

what goes up WILL come down.......dangerous ! Only draw a fire arm if you need to kill ....use a loudhailer and tell 'em to piss off !

      cyberdog.breath - 2012-08-06 16:31

Yeah, well, that bullet then needs to come down somewhere ... think about it ..At least aiming the warning shot at the intended targets saves some poor innocent victim in the surrounding area.

      carpejugulim - 2012-08-06 16:36

Sadly veritas a bullet fired into the sky and tumbling back under the effect of gravity does actually have the power to kill

  • sisie.indola - 2012-08-06 15:08

Maybe the police wanted the whole cow for themselves, they really didn't want to shear with the public.

      littlegiantn - 2012-08-06 16:14

See, the police were chasing the crowd trying to preserve and collect the evidence of the road accident. An evidence they would later make disppear by sharing amongst themselves...

  • deana.boshoff - 2012-08-06 15:18

Savages!!! Barbaric excuses of human beings! Why not put the cow out of it's misery before hacking away? Unbelievable- I'm sickened! Well done SAPS! Should have hacked pieces of the torturers flesh off as well. Hope they all get mad cow disease and die a slow and painful death!

      jaco.faling - 2012-08-06 15:24

Wow, another one needing to go for an english class. Slaughtering does not necessarily mean cruelly, animals are slaughtered for food all the time. What is cruel is the killing of a person by the police intended to protect the people.

      deana.boshoff - 2012-08-06 15:55

Jaco, I respectfully ask you what is not cruel about slaughtering a cow alive? Maybe I need English lessons as you so friendly advise- but I'd suggest you take a class in basic humanity and decency. Why make an animal suffer unnecessarily? They had the \tools\ to slaughter (butcher) it. If they had any respect for life they'd kill it first.

      linette.myburgh - 2012-08-06 16:26

@jaco-please revise your earlier comment and correct your past and present tense use... Before insulting another persons diction take care and ensure that your use of grammar is immaculate otherwise you're the one looking like an imbecile...Terwyl ons nou besig is JACO lewer kommentaar in afrikaans-dit is mos jou moedertaal

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-06 17:45

@Deana - slaughtering means KILLING, not cutting up. However, it wouldnt surprise me at all if they were in fact hacking it to pieces without killing it...

      linette.myburgh - 2012-08-06 19:22

Wel Tienie beslis nie vir jou nie - mens kan mos nie suurknolle 'impress'!!!

  • sesom - 2012-08-06 15:22

These Police must have received there training at Douglasdale Polce Station...

  • eric.f.moloi - 2012-08-06 15:31

Hw cn u kill a person who clean up a mess?

  • yuu.mee.351 - 2012-08-06 15:32

Wow News24 readers don't stop amazing neh, the cow was suffering, 1st of all a cow do not recover from any\r\nBrocken bone,it suffers to death, now the men who tried to help a cow in pain by helping their empty stomachs get killed by police! Wow clearly police wanted whole meat for themselves, so they fired a warning short, but aimed at a target(unarmed),sies very disgusting, can't shoot the rapists, burglars and murderes but accurately and swiftly on responsible individuals, what a shame! #ck the POLICE!

      veritas.odium.paret - 2012-08-06 15:43

Lol, they could still have waited for the owner to make descisions rather than helping their empty stomachs on his livestock.

      yuu.mee.351 - 2012-08-06 16:00

Lol yes I agree, but to shoot? I dis agree

  • ziggamann.shepard - 2012-08-06 15:43

How can a cow being knocked down lead to this? Shots fired as if people's lives were under threat.

  • Ntshobs - 2012-08-06 15:54

Is it the writer or the police who say,"police fired warning short", I never thought warning shorts can fatally kill except when you want to kill which is different from warning

  • karin.smit - 2012-08-06 16:07

SAVAGES!! The police should have shot all of them, they should be slaughtered while still alive!

  • - 2012-08-06 16:17

eish... these white folk who are quick to throw around statements such as "savages, barbaric, horrendous" - you guys ever been hungry, i mean really hungry?? do you think that such statements make a positive contribution to society today? and before you ask if others behaviour is positive, it is not about others now is it?? - 2012-08-06 18:14

oh please linette... where did the article say the animal was being tortured? to slaughter an animal means to kill it, right? so according to many customs this is achieved by slitting of the throat and the animal is left to bleed out... just because you are so desensitised and you buy your meat from some supermarket chain/butcher etc. all neatly packaged, cleaned and wrapped for you to consume makes it ok... believe me, those animals are as traumatised. was jy nog nooit op die plaas waar daar 'n bees of hoender geslag was nie? maybe your problem lies in that it is black people doing it, have you thought about that for a moment? in reality, if the SAPS were to do the humane thing, they would have shot the animal to put it out of it's suffering, as being hit by a car, it was already tortured, traumatised and dying... can you also please explain to me, where do you get the idea that only black people are hungry? or was that just an attempt at sarcasm? before you comment again... and tell me to get educated... think!

      linette.myburgh - 2012-08-06 19:24

Eish I inferred 'that only blacks have ever really been hungry' from your above mentioned rhetorical question and yes the animal should have been put out of its misery sooner than what it was. Yes you speak here as if the slitting of an animals throat is the issue here which it is not,it has to do with the events and happenings leading up to the 'slaughtering' and what happens with the slitting of throat. A couple of years ago our President bit the tail of a cow in a traditional ceremony to enable him to get the cow to move- cruel or not? How about cutting live-stocks tendons, preventing them from walking and to make it easier to catch to slaughter? All of that is 100% acceptable because the you are hungry? I buy my meat from reputable abattoirs -so I pay more for peace of mind. I can explain the process if need be-my friend owns the place. Don't assume anything- you know what that leads to....U ngagilinge Mgane wame
