Durban - Police Search and Rescue have taken over the search operation for the 58-year-old woman, reported to have gone missing from a yacht six nautical miles off-shore of the Tugela River mouth in KwaZulu-Natal.

Carly Hill had been sailing to Madagascar with her husband Peter. They had left Durban on Thursday.

The NSRI's Craig Lambinon said Peter Hill had raised the alarm after waking on Friday and finding his wife missing from the yacht. The search operation has focused on sea drift, prevailing currents and wind speed, as well as direction.

Despite an intensive search by the NSRI, no sign had been found of her by midday and the case had been handed over to the police.

"NSRI resources have returned to base."

Telkom Maritime Radio Service were continuing to broadcast an all ships alert, Lambinon added.

Police have opened a missing persons investigation into the incident and the South African Maritime Safety Authority has been informed.

The yacht is expected to return to Durban.
