Police use rubber bullets to disperse strikers

2012-10-27 13:52

Johannesburg - Police fired rubber bullets and used stun grenades to disperse a group of striking Anglo-American Platinum (Amplats) workers at a Cosatu rally in Rustenburg.

The group, clad in black t-shirts were blocking the entrance to the Olympia stadium where the rally was set to be held.

Police had been escorting the Congress of SA Trade Union marchers to the stadium when the confrontation took place.

A Sapa reporter at the scene said the group crossed the police line, and police fired rubber bullets to disperse them.

The group said earlier that it belonged to the Rustenburg branch of the National Strikers Committee.

The committee claims to represent striking mineworkers in Gauteng, North West and Limpopo.

They said they would not return to work until their demand of R16 000 salary increase was met.

The rally would be addressed by SA Communist Party secretary general Blade Nzimande, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe and Cosatu's general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

      luther.kingsley.5 - 2012-10-27 14:34

Alicia, not even like small children, I have children and they dont behave like this and they will definitely not behave like this when they are grown up, they have the savvy and self-respect not to.

      davorin.dobrovic - 2012-10-27 15:27

Alicia your capslock is on btw

      vandross.ntshegi - 2012-10-27 15:38

They shouldn't use rubber bullets, they should use real bullets and clean them all up

      jason.heineberg - 2012-10-27 15:52

....R16000??? Do they have a degree in mining or something? Since when is the salary for an unskilled (and by this I mean no tertiary qualification required) job so high? Ridiculous request, these people sure are delusional..

      mmenzisco - 2012-10-27 19:47

Vandross shame on you and those who like your comment. How narrow minded you may get?

      louis.olivier.988 - 2012-10-28 12:06

And started a riot amongst the lesbians

  • danie.strydom.7 - 2012-10-27 13:58

WHY? Get the live ammo there NOW

      edward.patterson.923 - 2012-10-27 14:14

Do you know who is meeting right now at Amplants HQ? A bunch of accountants and finance people. They are looking for the tipping point when it's just better to hand the keys to plant to the ANC and Cosatu and walk away. For all of his talk about nationalization, does Julius know how to run a mine? There are DFI in most countries who know far more about running their businesses than a government does. Then those workers who are demanding R16k from Amplants will be demanding it from the ANC, let's see how that works out.

      mshiniboys - 2012-10-27 15:23

Win the election so you can bring back that rubish.we are a civilised nation you rat!

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-27 14:09

How come Casatu gets police protection but not the DA, when they marched in Jo-berg. It clearly shows how Casatu is in cahoots with the ANC mining elite indicating how they sold working miners cheaply to multination corporates for years. ANC gives Casatu VIP police protection, I wonder if it is the same crew sent in at Marikana?

      Leonore Engelbrecht - 2012-10-27 14:37

so who keeps on buying them T-shirts? is it like election day: 'vote ANC and get a free t-shirt and a bread'?

  • ogodiseng.seonya.3 - 2012-10-27 14:10

why ddnt u jst use these rubber bullets during the strike at marikana

      raymond.buis.3 - 2012-10-27 14:15

They did for a whole week.

  • shirley.steenkamp - 2012-10-27 14:14

I sense another multi million rand "enquiry" for unnecessary force used on the poor strikers.Yhis is all a load of nonsense. Cosatu get police escorts but cause the trouble anyway. I suppose it depends which party you have in your pocket.

      Onke Mdingi - 2012-10-27 15:21

Cosatu and their ANC must accept DEFEAT. Their support group is diminishing day by day...

  • TawwaTienie - 2012-10-27 14:37

  • Leonore Engelbrecht - 2012-10-27 14:49

R16000???? i know doctors in state hospitals who dont get that much!

  • 0001000ghost - 2012-10-27 15:00

what gets me is, normally you rally, you voice your demands, then you leave..but in South Africa this is not normal. You strike, then you turn violent, then you have to be fired on in order to get you to leave. I hope someone remembered the brandy and coke, perhaps a few lamb tops and some wors, make a party of it. Why not?

      mshiniboys - 2012-10-27 15:09

South Africa is a racist country with people who do not believe in sitting on the same table as as someone poor.but can only sit when the factory is burning or when they start to lose something.

  • Charles Frederik Robberts - 2012-10-27 15:20

Lovely stuff! Enjoying the show as is the whole world. Go for it!

  • hitting.thefan - 2012-10-27 15:30

Whites r calling 4 live ammo for blacks to be killed like ants, it shows how happy they become when blacks are killed and hear them squeel when 1 of theirs is killed, i feel soooo ashamed to be associated with da, i can understand 1 or two lost cases, but the thumbs up says a lot.

  • joe.whiteman.9 - 2012-10-27 16:07

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-27 16:08

The first thing to do is do make the carrying of ANY weapons during protests and strikes illegal. These weapons give the unruly thugs a feeling of power which they are misusing!

      ...the farmer, the boer!

  • Vince.York - 2012-10-27 18:02

YOU MINERS voted ANC for this! SA voted ANC for this! Did you all think that you would also get a turn at all the tax payers funds and skropping buxom biddies all day long like your leaders? YOU MINERS are there to remain as the workers with no chance of change or improvement until the 'collective' of buxom maiden busters decides you may. BUT there is a solution. Ensure that massive change happens in December and then immediately call for a full change in government. THEN you will stand a chance to improve your personal lot and regain hope in life again.

  • lovespells - 2012-10-27 18:59

i think ramaphosa was right, there are criminal elements trying to hijack the workers revolution
