Johannesburg - Gauteng police said on Tuesday that a policeman and security guard were wounded following an attempted cash-in-transit robbery at the Randburg Square shopping centre in Johannesburg.

"It is alleged that [security] officials were dropping the money off at the mall when they were attacked by an unknown number of suspects," said spokesperson Doniah Mothutsane.

"The guards managed to run back to the car with the money. The suspects started shooting randomly and a security guard was shot and injured in the lower body."

The robbers fled the scene in a Polo and white bakkie. When they saw a police car, they began firing at it.

The policeman was wounded in the upper body and airlifted to hospital.

Police were investigating a case of attempted murder and attempted cash-in-transit robbery, said Mothutsane.

A rifle and pistol were taken from the security guards.
