Polo player knifed to death

Johannesburg - South African polo star Sibusiso Duma has been stabbed to death near Howick, in KwaZulu-Natal, the SA Polo Association confirmed on Wednesday.

"I can't confirm the details as to how or why this has happened, but he was stabbed and killed yesterday [Tuesday]," said the association's executive director Clive Peddle.

Duma, 25, represented South Africa against Australia in the Kirland International in 2009, scoring five goals in the game and receiving the player of the match award.

"I can't believe something so senseless can happen," Peddle said.

"He was the nicest guy and he always had a smile on his face.

"He was an icon for polo development and this is a tragic loss to the sport.

"He was a very talented boy with a great eye for the ball."

Duma, the first development polo player in South Africa to climb through the ranks to international level, had received a job offer to work with a professional polo player in England.

Peddle said he was supposed to have left the country already, but had been held back by visa issues.

"He just got a job overseas and he was meant to be over there two weeks ago," Peddle said.

"He was going to use the opportunity to gain experience and he hoped to become a professional player."
