Durban - A man accused of stabbing South African polo star Sibusiso Duma to death was denied bail in the Howick Magistrate's Court, the Witness reported on Tuesday.

Sibongiseni Mchunu, 24, allegedly killed Duma in Lidgetton, near Howick, on May 1.

Magistrate Thembinkosi Nene on Monday ordered Mchunu to remain in custody for his own safety.

"If the accused is released on bail, and is then killed by members of the outraged community, there will be no justice for the community and the accused," Nene was quoted as saying.

The matter was postponed to June 5.

Duma represented South Africa against Australia in the Kirkland International in 2009, scoring five goals and receiving the player of the match award.

He was the first development polo player in the country to climb the ranks to international level and had received a job offer to work with a professional polo player in England.
