Polo star's killer gets 15 years

Durban - The man who stabbed South African polo star Sibusiso Duma to death was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, the Mercury reported on Tuesday.

Sibongiseni Mchunu, 25, was sentenced on Friday and would also serve three years for the attempted murder of his girlfriend Smangele Sondeza.

Duma was killed in Lidgetton near Howick on May 1.

Mchunu pleaded not guilty to both the crimes claiming Sondeza was stabbed during a struggle after he had discovered "love messages" from Duma on her phone.

He said he only assaulted her and she had grabbed a knife.

Mchunu said he was at the taxi rank at the time of Duma's murder but Judge Kevin Swain rejected his version of events.

Duma represented South Africa against Australia in the Kirkland International in 2009, scoring five goals and receiving the player of the match award.

He was the first development polo player in the country to climb through the ranks to international level, and had received a job offer to work with a professional polo player in England.

He will get out when he turns 40, probably much earlier with parole... What a shockingly inadequate sentence!

Send him to Zim, I heard that the vacanat position of 'hangman' has now been filled and the hangman is eager to start work.

Wow life is cheap in South Africa, he will probably get parole in 5 years...and the Government thinks the crime will decrease in this country??

In another story an accountant from Cape Town got 7 years for defrauding SARS from R450 000. Quite a heavy sentence I reckon. By the same token, if you then do the math here, Mchunu's life was only worth R964 285,65 . 15 years is WAY too lenient for murder. How can you get heavier sentences for theft than for murder?!

I dont have enough fingers on my hands to count the amount of hard working people that worked either with me or for me, that has been killed for silly things like cellphones or R50 over the last 15 years. Sad.

  • Msika - 2012-09-11 10:51

Only in South Africa. The justice system is so pathetic.

      fabian.houten - 2012-09-11 11:59

Actually, that dude that killed like 60-something people in norway only got like 21 years. Apparently its their maximum sentence... So there are worse places.

  • malvina.vanbreemen - 2012-09-11 10:57

Another prime example of how the courts and criminal justice system are failing us, the public. This is a minimum sentence where a maximum sentence should have been applied, as Sbu Duma was one of our really brightly shining stars and an example to his peers and community on how to excel. The culture of murder and 'life is cheap' being cultivated in SA at present is unacceptable and until the courts start making a major example of all and any criminals, this will simply continue to grow as there are no meaningful consequences to ANY criminal act which could act as a deterrent.
