Polokwane - Power supply problems that led to a water shortage in parts of Polokwane were rectified on Sunday afternoon, the municipality said.

"Lepelle Northern Water has announced that water supply challenges experienced at the Olifantspoort Plant have been sorted," spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said.

"Water is being pumped to reservoirs in Polokwane, although levels are still very low. Areas that were affected by the shortage are presently receiving water with low pressure. It is expected for normal pressure to pick up later [in] the evening.

"Residents are still advised to limit water consumption to immediate household needs and avoid irrigation of gardens and washing cars."

She said in an earlier statement that the problem had gotten worse on Sunday morning.

"The situation got worse this morning with some reservoirs drying up," she said.

"This has significantly contributed to water shortages in high laying areas within the municipality. These include Flora Park, Serala View, Thornhill, some parts of Ster Park, Bendor, and surrounding areas," she said earlier.

Water tankers were also sent to the affected areas for "temporary relief", according to the municipality.
