Poor students will get funding - Nzimande

2013-01-24 13:04

Johannesburg - All poor students admitted into tertiary institutions will get funding, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande promised on Thursday.

"Although we don't have adequate funds, students from poor backgrounds who have been admitted to colleges or universities will get funding... All of them... That is guaranteed, " he said at a New Age business briefing in Johannesburg.

He said the government had allocated R8bn for education sponsorships this year.

Most of the money had been put into the national student financial aid scheme for students at Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.

The government aimed to motivate students to opt for these institutions rather than regular universities.

"We are short of very critical skills that one cannot get at universities... you can only get them at FET colleges," Nzimande said.

"You can't go to university to be a plumber, electrician, welder or a boiler maker."

Changes needed

Nzimande said some changes needed to be made for students to start choosing FET colleges.

Lecturers needed more training and the standard of education needed to be improved.

He encouraged more universities to credit students who came with qualifications from FETs, and stressed that companies should consider taking in more college students for learnerships, apprenticeships, and internships.

Nzimande said his department had the challenge of creating opportunities for all South Africans, not just those who had completed grade 12.

"Every South African, whether you have passed or failed, we must create an opportunity for you to acquire a skill, even if you got 20%."

Will this be based on race or family monthly income???

      nigel.olifaunt - 2013-01-24 13:24

Ask a stupid question . . . You know whites will be excluded.

      phillys.winterbottom - 2013-01-24 13:31

pineapple face is such a farcking racist & criminal and you ask that question?

      D_MAN - 2013-01-24 13:54

The only thing the whites will be doing is paying for them with our hard worked tax money. Where else will they get the money to pay. All of its been spent on Zuma's house and on upgrading the ministers houses

      Jason/Michelle - 2013-01-24 14:01

@ssmonareng, you crazy? Highest matric pass rate, impossible not to achieve seeing that the standards have been lowered drastically. If the standard of education was even slightly close to what it was 10+ years ago, we would be able to count the passing matriculants on one hand!

      abner.malema - 2013-01-24 14:01

Big up New Age breakfast u brought the minister to give us the good news

      piet.boom.90 - 2013-01-24 14:05

u ask stupid questions, did nzimande mentioned anything to do with race.we know most of whites are not poor,so automatical wont qualify.

      colin.langley - 2013-01-24 14:08

SSMORON-ENG...are you fekking kidding me? You accept that 30% gives you a fabulous starting point in life? Jesus christ! I just can't get why you are so damn stupid. You should also be removed from the gene pool..Jisis man..gatvol!

@bearpup - good one, about time...

      D_MAN - 2013-01-24 14:26

At ssmonareng. If you call a 30% a great pass then you are pathetic.

      SaniGhana - 2013-01-24 14:34

I feel ashamed when we talk to white friends about these things, why can these white youths not get money they did not play in apartheid

      linds.ronhouse - 2013-01-24 15:26

@Michelle, I can assure you that it will not be based on race. Student finance has been there for some time now and it was never based on race. You have to submit proof of income for your parents, and other supporting documents. If you get good results, a huge part of the loan is converted to a bursary. I'm one of the former beneficiaries so I know.

      jesibelle.krueger - 2013-01-24 21:01

This Nzimade goon is just a stupid as that trolling freak ssmonareng... Hey BLUNT BLADE, if you don't have adequate funds, then how will you fund your feckless parasites - that I will bet you anything you like, will fail en masse in any event (as they "passed at school simply because of the colour of their skins)..? O, I forgot - the Zumamba Gestapo - aka SARS, will simply steal more from whites - the same whites the Zumamba begged for investment in SA, at Davos..! Interesting to note that the diametric opposite is happening - the rand has nose-dived and investors are fleeing from SA, since the demon babbled at Davos - the world is growing wise to the pure evil that is the ANC. But do not worry - the devil's demons did the same the Israel/Jews, throughout the ages - WE HAVE GOD ON OUR SIDE, we will be victorious over the demonic evil that has taken hold of SA. As Archbishop Tutu said: there will come a day that we will pray for the end of the ANC just as people prayed for the end of Apartheid. Well, the time is here - START PRAYING..!!!

Good! But can I just say that if we give our kids everything - they do not work as hard as they would if there were repercussions... In other words - they must earn it by producing certain grades - if they don't - then they need to work the money back for free.... If we don't do deliverables like this - we will not get a motivated group of youngesters just another lot standing with their hands out expecting freebies.... That which we work for is appreciated more than that which we get for nothing. Use it - lose it!

  • larry.hannigan.31 - 2013-01-24 13:21

With a pass rate of 30% you seriously think this money will be well spent? On the other hand we know the SOP of the ANC, promise them they will get funding just to prevent riots and strikes, and divert the funds to the well connected officials. Maybe Angie can get a cut too?

  • philip.venter1 - 2013-01-24 13:22

When you say everyone, does that include white people too? Because I could surely use the cash to go study since BEE and AA made my parents so poor that they can no longer afford any kind of tertiary education for me or my siblings.

  • colleen.erasmus.7 - 2013-01-24 13:22

Funded by New Age, who is in turn funded by Eskom, Telkom, etc, who is in turn funded by the taxpayers.

      Alan - 2013-01-24 14:01

If I managed a Tertiary Institution I would want to see that money up front. The ANC does not exactly have a squeaky clean record about paying their bills. I would hate to see Universities and Colleges go under because of the ANC not paying.

  • holger.schonfeld.9 - 2013-01-24 13:50

the only problem with his statement and vision is that funding will ONLY be for 1) Public FET's - as private FET's and i quote" challange our education system" and 2) only funding of majority race will be accepted. so i ask you who is trying ti kill of skills opportunities. i run a private FET and offer international diplomas at local prices yet cannot get support for my target group - rural learners ...because i am not public FET - ie government controlled....where to from here i ask

      Banele Xaji - 2013-01-24 14:15

I for one would never consider going to your FET college, your statement about race is misinformed and misplaced. NSFAS does not ask what your race is, only your financial status, as it where white people, atleast majority of them can afford funding their own childrens education as they earn F times more than a black household. Further I have seen white people who are studying on NSFAS at universities, if their parents cannot afford, the state grants them the loan.

I am totally gobsmacked. The Government must have a bottomless money pit!

They were pushed back and forth between the university's funding office, and NSFAS, with no resolution. I wish this man's promises were in fact fulfilled. Michelle Archer, the process is usually based on income, not race.

      Banele Xaji - 2013-01-24 14:35

  • Evi - 2013-01-24 14:34

What are the eligibility criteria and will any culture be disadvantaged or excluded ? What Tertiary Courses are being offered for students who got 20 % ? I trust that all impoverished will be assisted equitably in keeping with the constitution and that the skills training will realistically correlate to ability levels. It is a step in the right direction to assist more people to acquire skills and thus to be able to find employment and hence to reduce poverty and all the associated logistics.

I was very grateful for my funding in the first 2 years of varsity. They do pick all races who are citizens. If you can prove you are financially burdened enough to not afford the degree you will get it. For the national student fund, students will be required to pay back their grant once they are working. So what is the problem? In my opinion, granting funding for those who deserve to study is the right thing to do.

Take a look at institutions like Olifants and other training centers. The number of such places need to be increased, and the standard of training there needs to be looked at, as it seems to be dropping with every passing year.
