'Possessed' man stoned to death

2012-08-27 10:22

Durban - A man was stoned to death by residents after he burned down his mother's home in Elandskop outside of Pietermaritzburg, the Witness reported on Monday.

Nhlanhla Dlamini's family believed he was possessed by evil spirits after he tried to stab his mother with a knife some time ago.

After Dlamini tried to stab his mother his family got a protection order against him and sent him away.

According to the Witness, the 46-year-old man showed up at his family home on Saturday without an invitation while they were having a tombstone unveiling ceremony.

"He came here yesterday [Saturday] and burnt down three huts," said a relative who spoke to the Witness on condition of anonymity.

After burning down the huts he was taken from the family's property and stoned to death by angry residents.

The newspaper said it could not reach police for a comment.

This man was obviously in need of mental care. In this country it is cheaper to stone a person than find him the medical help he needed. It won't be long now and we will all be back to oil lamps, candles and a fire in the yard for cooking.

he was not possessed-it could be drugs or anything else.instead of stoning him to death, the residents could have handed him over to authorities, now the whole community got blood on their hands and its not right

"The newspaper said it could not reach police for a comment." FAIL. Surely the Police are not that hard to get hold of?

It is not so long ago that Western European culture burned such people at the stake or even worse, systematically drowned them. It requires some social sophistication to understand mental disorders and emotional issues that lead to violent and rage-driven behavior. This is Africa, good people, and while the first world values are here, the third world values still predominate in the rural population and therefore also in the marginal communities around the major cities. I wonder how the Romans felt when they met the Gauls and the Saxons? Give it time and along the way it may be best to accept that this is how it is likely to be.
