Pretoria - Trains operating in Pretoria's northern regions were delayed on Wednesday because of power failures, said Metrorail in Gauteng.

The delays were "major" and lasted more than two hours, spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said.

The power failures were caused by loose overhead cables between the Pretoria North, Hercules and Koedoespoort stations.

Metrorail had implemented contingency measures, including using a diesel locomotive to haul trains out of affected sections.

"In addition, a train shuttle service has been introduced between Pretoria North and Hercules and between Hercules to Koedoespoort on the goods line.

"Commuters detraining [disembarking] at Mountain View and Daspoort stations will be affected because the train is utilising a line that does not have platform facilities for commuters. This means that the train will not stop at the two stations to offload commuters."

Mofokeng said technicians were trying to restore the service before the start of the afternoon peak.
