Cape Town -  In its annual report tabled in Parliament, Prasa states it has lost millions of rands to irregular and wasteful expenditure and that it has failed to meet its own safety targets.

According to the Sunday Independent, the state agency, that operates Metrorail, Shosholoza Meyl and long-distance bus company Autopax, failed to meet 52 % of its targets in the year.

Among their shortcomings included R14.9m worth of irregular expenditure due to procurement awards being made without three quotations being obtained and wasteful expenditure of over R3m.

Prasa’s annual report states that there are forensic investigations under way, including one carried out over irregularities involving their payroll.

The report also states that Prasa did not meet its safety targets and that rail fatalities increased in the year.

This was apparently due to overcrowding on trains.

Injuries, however, were lower but still looked set to cost the company millions. Prasa has listed contingent liabilities of more than R590m - which also include labour disputes.
