Johannesburg - A pregnant woman was one of several people freed from the wreckage of a bus after it collided head-on with another bus in Johannesburg on Friday morning.

The woman has been taken to hospital.

One of the bus drivers died in the incident.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said Fire and Rescue Services were freeing people from both vehicles.

The buses crashed head-on on Jan Smuts Avenue at the Johannesburg Zoo.

Metro police said earlier that the other bus driver was still stuck in his bus.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said almost 100 people were injured in the accident, however Meiring said at least 41 people were being treated for minor to critical injuries.

The cause of the crash was being investigated.

Minnaar said Jan Smuts Avenue has been closed in both directions until the scene is cleared. Lower Park Road is also closed.

Motorists were urged to use Oxford Road instead.
