Premier not helping teen blue light victim

2012-04-12 10:00

Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has backed down on an earlier promise to help cover blue-light accident victim Thomas Ferreira's medical costs, according to a newspaper report on Thursday.

Mokonyane originally told Ferreira's parents and the media that her department would help cover expenses.

Ferreira, 19, was knocked off his motorcycle by the speeding car of local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi on November 5.

Mokonyane asked local government and housing department head Mongezi Monyane to manage negotiations about Ferreira's accident costs.

He told Beeld newspaper on Wednesday that he thought there had been a misunderstanding about what the premier said.

"If the premier's office or my office had to pay the costs, I don't know what budget this was supposed to have come out of," he said.

Public promise by premier

Ferreira was brain damaged in the accident and spent weeks in a coma. He was only recently discharged from a rehabilitation centre.

Mokonyane visited the family on November 8 and publicly promised - in front of the media and Ferreira's family - to cover his medical costs.

In a press statement issued later that day, Mokonyane's spokesperson Xoli Mngambi said, among other things, that: "Mokonyane made a promise to the family that the provincial government will take care of Ferreira's medical costs."

According to the Ferreiras, their son's medical bills already amount to over R1m.

The Ferreira's lawyer Karl Schuler has applied for an interim payout from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

Monyane told Beeld that he had contacted a senior RAF official to try and expedite the process.

The costs are supposed to come out of HER personal account.Stupid bitch can't even take responsibility for her actions. The boys parents should sue her fat ass

      Denny - 2012-04-12 11:30

Spot on. Her department paying actually just means us taxpayers are being made to shell out. Again. I hope the MEC gets taken to the cleaners.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-04-12 12:18

      Her or him... whatever

      Phillys - 2012-04-12 14:12

Lol, I've caught staff members stealing on CCTV & they always deny that it is them on the footage... go figure???

      Phillys - 2012-04-12 14:14

Warren, when you have the IQ of a walnut, what do you expect? lying comes naturally to some!!!

  • christian.helberg - 2012-04-12 10:12

Nomvula you are despicable, shame on you

      Warren - 2012-04-12 11:36

Typical ANC politician... nothing new... just another broken promise. What will surprise me is if she does NOT deny making that commitment.

  • John - 2012-04-12 10:15

Why is there no prosecution of this fat cat, his car skips a stop sign and runs down an innocent boy? Now the bigger cat will not pay anything to his medical expenses. If it had been a bus accident or similar the whole Gauteng government would have been offering money etc.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-12 13:41

John, the ANC and it's band of crooks are above the law.

      Esther - 2012-04-12 16:43

And that same fat cat said on radio (shortly after it happened) that he did not want to comment because the family 'should be given time to come to terms with what happened'and told listeners about the beautiful prayer the premier said when visiting the family!!!

  • Wimpie.Haefele - 2012-04-12 10:18

She probable used the money for a wall round her property or a new car

      justindeklerk - 2012-04-12 10:41

      Or lunch.

  • ailsa.j.loudon - 2012-04-12 10:23

Not at all surprised. These people blow hot air out of their bums!

  • Wendy - 2012-04-12 10:24

It was an uneducated and ill informed promise. Where does this money come from in the provincial budget? And it would lead to other similar claims which involved government vehicles. What a sad indictment about the knowledge of this premier - empty words which again put the ANC in a position of unfulfilled promises. Maybe it should come out of her own pocket.

  • Judith - 2012-04-12 10:25

So the perpetrator gets off scot free and the premier breaks her commitment - why didn't we expect this? Charges need to be laid against the perpetrator, including damages and the perpetrator needs to be removed from office without pay immediately

  • Judith - 2012-04-12 10:26

So the perpetrator gets off scot free and the premier breaks her commitment - why didn't we expect this? Charges need to be laid against the perpetrator, including damages and the perpetrator needs to be removed from office without pay immediately

  • Shirley - 2012-04-12 10:28

      Pule - 2012-04-12 11:23

Shirley why are you always aggressive? Can't you comment politely?

      Shirley - 2012-04-12 11:49

Why is your government so skelm????

      Pule - 2012-04-12 11:56

I'm also concern of corruption, dishonesty, nepotism and fraud in this minority government.I know you might be angry but You point can always be considered with polite words. We feel the same way as you do but Insult is not worth it.

      Shirley - 2012-04-12 12:04

There was nothing impolite-only truthful! If the truth hurts.....

      Jacqui - 2012-04-12 13:42

      Pule, stupidness causes aggression.

  • patrick.saunders123 - 2012-04-12 10:30

in other words "...our lawyers have told us that to foot the bill would be seen as an admission of guilt. Therefore if you want money you'll have to sue us."

  • Robsschele - 2012-04-12 10:32

Always claiming misunderstanding. Do they not read the newspapers after they made public statements to ensure that they are quoted correctly? Some nice limelight at the time to state they will pay his medical bills. Probably thought he might not survive the injuries he sustained in the accident then it will look good in the court case if it is said that they were prepared to pay his medical bills.

  • sharon.truebodyvice - 2012-04-12 10:34

She should cover ALL medical bills not help pay , her comrade knocked the young man down through his own ego and entitlement ( I can do wot I want and u fluckers cant stop me)

  • Murechen - 2012-04-12 10:34

Since my tax money is meant to foot this bill, I have no problem with this CHILD being assisted.

  • Vernon - 2012-04-12 10:35

  • Brad.Kopping - 2012-04-12 10:35

The ANC has shown its true just DOESN'T CARE about its citizens!! If they knock you off your bike or nearly kill you...oh well! Spineless politicians >:( THEY MAKE ME SICK!

  • Dennis - 2012-04-12 10:36

Well, she was not going to get anything out of it !! Proper fat cat itch with a B !!

  • Johan - 2012-04-12 10:39

What else did you expect from a ANC politician? If their lips move they are lying

  • Victor - 2012-04-12 10:40

    lowlife scumbag trash from hell

  • Natzi - 2012-04-12 10:41

Nomvula & her sheep are a total disgrace to South Africa... But why are we not surprised the government has never kept to any other promise...

  • Mike - 2012-04-12 10:47

Now here's where the DA should step in and start a fund raising for him, show the ancorruption that they better and actually try take care of citizens and not their pockets. it will be a BIG smack in the face of the 'premier'

      raath - 2012-04-12 13:53

A trust fund was set up, so it will be great if we can all show our support.

      Mike - 2012-04-12 14:34

Thanks Raath, ill be looking into that and so should everybody else. If government wont pay for their reckless 'mistakes' then its up to us.

  • Pule - 2012-04-12 10:47

Premier go to hell with your son(that thug of yours).Infact I want to date you give me your number.

  • Graham - 2012-04-12 10:51

Has a ANC politician every told the truth or fulfilled a promise? Whose the real racists?

  • winston.mullany - 2012-04-12 10:58

I may sound like a racist here but I don't see any black guys coming out in support of this youngster! Yet white people come out in support of a black individual when something like this happens. Please prove me wrong and that we don't base our mentality solely on a race base.

      malcolm.molver - 2012-04-12 15:02

You're right. They're not helping this poor guy simply because of the colour of his skin. If he was black they would've bent over backwards to help him.

  • KCorsar - 2012-04-12 10:59

anything less expected, settling this makes the kitty less attractive to plunder.........................

  • Paulo - 2012-04-12 10:59

i'm not suprised-just sad that the family have to go through this. How long will be contrinued to be governed like this.

  • Sean - 2012-04-12 11:00

This is just f@cken pathetic !!! Just gows to show , the ANC leadership feels nothing for no one !!

  • FeebleGastro - 2012-04-12 11:01

When their lips are moving, they are lying. It's in the genes, I suppose.

  • Koos - 2012-04-12 11:02

Less to steal if they pay the medical bills.

  • bridgidw - 2012-04-12 11:02

This annoys me. How can you say what budget will pay for his medical costs! surely we could have on less million rand party thrown. Shows how compassionate our government is!

  • krzyszt0f - 2012-04-12 11:02

  • Ben - 2012-04-12 11:17

Knowing the Premier I believe she will keep her promise. Le's hope sanity - and good promises - will prevail and 'budget' red tape will not get in the way.

      Heiku - 2012-04-12 15:14

She is a politician so she lies all the time I can't believe you have not realised that, knowing her personally and all...

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-12 19:07

Ben, small hope of that happening - she has not fulfilled any of her promises to date - is known not to settle outstanding bills - why has the sheriff had to attach goods from her offices? She obviously has no integrity.

  • Zakhele - 2012-04-12 11:18

I'm not at all suprised, seemingly its her nature. Both her mouth nd mind r opposition parts that never aggries on anything. Same primier denied knowing anything abt eToll system, bt was among the 1st to register in this great highway robbery. Its not a black or white neither a rich or poor issue. My prayers 2 this young man nd family.

  • Geoffrey - 2012-04-12 11:31

Yet another terrible example for the youth of today. Ones word should be ones bond - reneging on which is all the more heinous when by a person in authority.

  • frank.hartry - 2012-04-12 11:34

In any normal deomcratic country the ANC MEC Mnemezi who was being conveyed by the bully boy blue light gangsters would have been charged, convicted and jailed for leaving the scene of a crime before the police and emergency personnel arrived. South Africa is an abnormal country when it comes to these ANC louts and the only way to deal with them is through the courts. To those that disagree, what about this ANC thieving member of parliment Sicelo Shiceka who spent millions of rands of taxpayers money to visit his drug mule girlfriend in a Swiss jail and is refusing to pay it back. Don't worry, even the ineffective new 'Corruption Watch' is not insisting that he pay back the stolen money.

  • ngcebom3 - 2012-04-12 11:46

And than they expect to get our votes again, only if we had credable opposition. This goes on to show how much this government cares about the people. They only interested in enriching them selves

  • Roy - 2012-04-12 11:51

What's wrong with the Ferreira family why don't they sue this S.O.B? They should not have waited this long and believed that Monyane would have paid. Get your Lawyer to start immediately with the necessary steps to sue this idiot and the premier,Nomvula Mokonyane who made the promise to pay all his medical fees. The reason why they most probably don't have the money is because someone stole the money

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-12 19:13

Perhaps they do not know that some lawyers will take this case on a "no cure no pay" basis. If they are made an award, the lawyer nogotiates a portion of that amount. There are plenty very good lawyers out there that can and will gladly take this on.

  • Andrew - 2012-04-12 12:06

So no surprise there then. Take it out of the theft, tender and government car budget. Or here's a thought, sell the car that hit him. Muppets

  • Chez - 2012-04-12 12:17

And from what budget is the family going to take the funds from? This is disgusting and frightening. That our powers-that-be can get away with whatever they like, is the reason this country is losing its morals.

      Mike - 2012-04-12 14:37

when it comes to the anc, what morals?

  • Natascha - 2012-04-12 12:18
