Johannesburg - A man was shot and later died when he tried to evade arrest near the Quaggasrand mall golf course, Pretoria West, on Thursday, police said.

Police patrolling the area saw a man running from them and gave chase, police spokesperson Neville Malila said.

When a policeman caught up with him near the golf course, he attacked the officer with a sharp object, injuring his left arm and body, said Malila.

The policeman fired three shots, one of which them hit the man.

He later died from the wound.

"A big knife, pair of scissors, as well as three cellphones were found at the scene. Police also confiscated drugs, nyaope and dagga, to the value of R5 000," Malila said.

The policeman was taken to hospital and later discharged.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate would investigate.

Police had opened cases of murder, possession of drugs, malicious damage to property, attacking a police officer, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
