Johannesburg - A police officer shot dead his wife and daughter in Pretoria West, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"On 12 September [Saturday] at about 23:00 at Pretoria West, a police member aged 46-years-[old] was arrested for the murder of his wife and his daughter," spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

"He is working for the VIP close protection [unit]."

It is believed a neighbour heard gun shots and when he went to the house, he found the bodies of the officer's wife and daughter lying in a pool of blood.

"The suspect was inside the house. The neighbour called police and paramedics. The wife and daughter were declared dead on the scene. Police are in the process of informing families."

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was investigating the shooting.

The officer was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.
