Pretoria cracks down on illegal immigrants

Pretoria - A clampdown on illegal immigrants led to 200 arrests in Sunnyside, Pretoria on Thursday.

Officials from the department of home affairs, trade and industry, police and the SA Revenue Service swooped on businesses and streets in the densely populated area.

Home affairs head of law enforcement Amanda Ledwaba said the sting operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal immigration.

"We have detained those people we have found without valid documents to be in South Africa. We will still be verifying their status and deporting some of them," she said.

Ledwaba said before being deported to their country of origin, every person was given a chance to appeal the deportation process.

"If they choose to contest the deportation, we release them. We give them a notice instructing them to report to a home affairs centre at intervals until the whole appeal process is over," she said.

Similar operations had been carried in Garsfontein and Johannesburg, said Ledwaba.

"We do these raids when we have observed the trends, or members of the public give us tip-offs. We are set to continue with such programmes randomly in the streets or at road blocks," she said.

Numerous people were bundled into police vans as officials went into every shop, stopped people in the streets and demanded to see documentation.

What goes around comes around, apartheid power raids again, immigrants are ill treated by black police officers the way the boers treated them.

      john.barbarian.9 - 2012-08-17 03:49

Pure Shanaaz doesn't know that in the way to the deportation camp near Sun City at least 80% of them are released back. Don't worry Shannaz. "Beauty" will come back on Monday as usual.

      Olusunne - 2012-08-17 06:44

      Oviously,those 200 were black africans.

So shanaaz, lets forget for a moment that you are still stuck in 1975 and that you are surely a racist! If it is illegal to go into another country without proper documentation and permission ALL OVER THE WORLD, why should these people get special treatment? Is Barack Obama a rasict? Because his government has the same policies and they deport 1000's of illegals every day! "..the way the boers treated them.." Wander what you will say if I used the "k" word describing a group of people? Get back in your racist box and stay there please! People like you do nothing for nationbuilding!

I've never understood the paranoia over immigrants. They generally benefit the country they settle in. Who invented the passport? Tsarist Russia, I believe.

      aphiwe.mayola - 2012-08-17 08:33

Yeah maybe immigrants do however the issue here is ILLEGAL immigrants. In order 4 resources 2 work efficiently there has 2 be an idea of how many ppl r being served n when there's ppl unaccounted 4 it strains the process I'm guessing. They should follow the correct processes that's all. Again, I don't have a problem with immigrants nhe, just the illegal part I don't condone!

  • aphiwe.mayola - 2012-08-17 08:22

Y are there negotiations n appeals tho? Wonder if all the Greek, Portuguese n Algerian shops n resturants r raided aswel... just a thought I've been 2 some of them n I do believe something was suspect so let's not 4get that illegal immigrants can come in all forms of shape, size, gender and color SAPS tu. Guess I'd better start carrying my ID because I don't want any misunderstandings. Lol!

  • dracolusus - 2012-08-17 10:22

They missed a few hundred thousand Nigerians...

      sandra.j.rennie - 2012-08-17 11:31

But they aren't illegal - they're the Drug Lords ! There is a difference !

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-08-19 15:28

And you sir are an idiot to pick on a people who you obviously know nothing about but discriminate against.

  • Olusunne - 2012-08-17 10:23

i will be very happy if police can assist foreigners who are falling into victim of so called fake immigration agents who are issuing fake permit.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-08-19 15:35

Don't waste you time, hoping for that is like hope for the sun to turn green. The south African immigration officials are the worst in the world, they take advantage of foreigners and exploit them to get rich. Why do you think their immigration laws are so weird and sometimes unbelievably ridiculous. They know how to fix the issue of illegal immigrants but refuse to use the right methods because their mobile "ATMs" will seize to exist.Just accept that we foreigners who come here to SA are here to make the immigration officials and police rich.

  • twist.cas - 2012-08-17 10:55

If they choose to contest the deportation, we release them. We give them a notice instructing them to report to a home affairs centre at intervals until the whole appeal process is over? Hell no' they won't report to home affairs, instead they will move to another city within the country. Please stop playing with our resources.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-08-19 15:53

And you know that for a fact because your are foreigner? Don't be ignorant and assume things that you have no clue about.Try to engage the next foreigner you meet and find out what he/she goes through when he tries to get legalized in SA.Ask the minister of Home affairs why their is a backlog over 1 million application for residence permits? Ask the minister of home affairs why she changed a system that was working to one that is now stagnant and increasing the number of illegal immigrants in the country daily.I am talking about the fact that only the Pretoria home affairs can now issue permits unlike before when all home affair had authority to issue permits. The chaos this change has caused now is of epic proportions.Foreigners all over the country now have to wait for over a year to receive permits and permit renewals because all the applications are processed by incompetent officials in one single office. The only way to get your permit issued faster is to bribe an home affairs official with at least R10,000.You see how screwed we foreigners are? If your government had enacted fair ,sensible ,straight forward immigration laws as well as employing properly trained and qualified immigration officers most of the problems you have now will not be there.Your home affairs will have everyone documented and there will be very few illegal immigrants.Other countries don't complain about immigrants because their house is in order and their home affairs is not corrupt.

how do you report a person who is in SA illigally. No ID and an expired British passport. Came for a holiday in 2009 and never left. Works and earns money and there is not a trace of him anywhere.
