Johannesburg - The burnt body of an elderly woman was found outside her house in Mamelodi, Pretoria on Wednesday, police said.

Captain Johannes Maheso said neighbours called the police when they saw the 88-year-old woman's body lying near her door outside her house.

She lived alone, but was also renting out rooms in her yard.

The woman's 46-year-old grandchild was taken in for questioning.

88 years old and burned to death ... has anybody got respect for the elderly anymore?

This woman was looking after a child and just maybe she was heating something over an open flame for herself or the child and caught alight. Maybe the child ran to her and she was forced to run outside and collapsed there from shock and smoke inhalation. This happened to a young woman in her mid 30's with 2 small children in broad daylight. Before she could help herself she had to run from her toddler. Miraculously she actually survived despite horrendous injuries but this was an old woman and the shock alone could have killed her.

As an 80 year old, I can state that we are a nuisance to society and the sooner we depart, the happier people will be. In the malls and shops, I use a trolley as a defence weapon against people looking at their cells and blithely trample you. A trolley thrust up a backside gets attention to look where they are going. Poetic Justice is that you either die young or you WILL get old and frail. Only the toughest can survive old age as it is not for sissies.

Good for you Dinky, I am not that old, but have riddden into many a backside that gets in my way at shopping malls, Oops sorry, you stopped in front of me.

Good for you guys, at 80 Dinky you still can type wow hands up to you girl. I agree with you though my mother is 75 but she can be so handful sometimes but that doesn't give us any right to take other people's life. How can one live with themsleves knowing that they killed someone. Rest in peace Lady, you were so lucky to reach 88 because honestly the youth of today dies like flies..

      Gail - 2012-01-12 13:05

Amen Dinky. I'm ready to go but sadly have longevity genes on both sides and have survived 2 accidents which should have killed me, so what hope do I have? I haven't reached 70 yet but have a 90 year old mother who is blind and very frail and still has all her marbles. Please G-d don't let me get that old and have nobody to talk to because those around me are senile or not interested in the world anymore. I will watch out for you with your trolley!

Not all 80 year old's are a nuisance to society and many still are able to contribute to society. As an 80 year old, I am independant and work an 8 to 5 day and am respected in my local community - furthermore by no maens am I the only old person still working and contributing to their fellow man's existance. Agreeing with Dinky wish to add that it makes good sense to aVOID THOSE PLACES WHERE i COULD BE SEEN AS A NUISANCE.
