Pretoria lawyer stabs, kills boy's dog

2012-09-14 08:36

Pretoria - A Pretoria lawyer has been arrested after he stabbed and killed the dog of a 12-year-old boy while both were out walking their animals.

The incident happened in a security estate in Moreletapark at about 16:00 on Wednesday, reported Beeld.

The boy, Aiden Viljoen, was walking his ridgeback Samson and another dog, Kiara, on a lead when the dog saw Francois Greeff come along with his two dogs.

The ridgeback apparently started pulling forward to get to the other dogs where according to the boy, there was a lot of growling and the leads got tangled up.

However, the dogs did not bite each other.

The lawyer allegedly leaned forward, over the boy, and stabbed the dog, piercing Samson’s lungs, causing him to die barely an hour later.

“He hurt Simson and Kiara was also cut on the ear. He then stood back and I asked him: ‘Did you just cut my dog?’ and he said yes. I asked: ‘Aren’t you going to apologise? And he said ‘no’ and walked away.”

“Simson came to lie against me and when I looked down I saw blood dripping down his leg. My dog didn’t deserve that,” said the sad boy.

Viljoen received the dog from his grandfather who died last year.

Greeff allegedly told the boy’s father that he used the knife to defend himself and his dogs.

But he told Beeld that he understood that what he did was wrong.

Some people are seriously starting to lose the plot. There are only bad news in the news. Raping, killing and the list go on. People should get their priorities straight.

The man who stands and watches as another commits a crime is just as guilty.

Perhaps first try and get away from the situation before you take deadly action - who was the grownup in this situation??

  • werner.victor.31 - 2012-09-14 08:53

And he also cut the other dog! so it could well have been the boy! yes lets all do that and swing around knives when there are kids around!

Poor Kid,poor dog-did not deserve to die that way. What is the maximum sentence that this lawyer can get?

      lorain.maseko - 2012-09-14 10:04

I have to wonder what the hell he was thinking. he should be jailed on top of being sued.

I assume the lawyer will just get a fine, we arent that strict with animal cruelty.

  • had.enuf.1 - 2012-09-14 08:56

This is beyond belief. If the news article is telling it like it happened and the dogs were not having an almighty scrap, killing each other, there is no need to have attacked any dogs in "self-defence". Also, this happened inside a security estate, so one would hardly expect much trouble whilst out strolling with your dog. Why would a seemingly educated person suddenly behave like a complete savage in this manner ? I cannot imagine carrying a knife for self defence. I wouldn't like to let an attacker get that close, but of course you never can control the circumstances of an attack. What about pepper spray or something less lethal in a seemingly safe area ?

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-14 09:02

Why did he feel the compulsion to carry a knife in a security estate? Now he has put his career on the line. Lawyers should not have criminal records as they are officers of the court whose duty is to assist in upholding the law

      irma.white.9 - 2012-09-14 16:20

I agree- a knife is ridiculous.

  • karen.gerhardi - 2012-09-14 08:57

Sadly the animal protection act is rather toothless and this guy probably knows it. I say name and shame him. The only real pain he will feel is if he loses business over this.

      willie.viljoen.33 - 2012-09-14 15:59

Hey everyone, Thank you so much for your interest. He was accused of malicious damage to property witch is a Class A Offence. There are no bite marks and when my brother and I visited him his words was that he prevented the situation. He showed no remorse what so ever. My brother's son is devastated as my father was well known in the Ridgeback Community for his beautiful dogs and this was a gift from him, kind of a last living memory. He was the adult and also being a lawyer he should have better judgment. I also placed my pocket knife in his hand and told him to open it before i got to him jut to show him that if a dog is attacking you, you will first kick or punch there is no time to open the knife. I hope this clears up some questions. The Criminal Court date is the 2nd of October and Beeld will do a follow-up on the day that the dogs Ashes are being put with my fathers.

  • warwick.railton.7 - 2012-09-14 09:36

Nail him hard. A person that does this to animals has no place in society, he himself is a reject, and his profession is also tainted with how they manipulate and corrupt the justice system. Why should a young boy be subjected to the hate of one small man? Nail this garbage.

No 12 year old (or anyone for that matter) should ever be subjected to their pet dying in their arms because of some chop trying to be Bear Grills, strolling in a secure complex with a knife. Put him in a prison for one night - in our delinquent system he should receive the punishment he deserves.

Its murder, because killing any living being with only selfish intentions in mind (yes, killing that dog was selfish and inhumane) is murder. That dog did not do anything bad and that man scared that boy for life, so yes,he murdered that kids childhood.

What I cannot understand is why use a knife when you feel your dogs life is in danger. Surely a full grown man can pull the dogs apart with the help of the 2 boys. Why that reaction? We have people walking their dogs with a "skokstok" that is made for dogs so if your dog gets attacked it is the most human way to scare the other dog off. The poor kid who had to see his dog die in his arms. The man admitted he was wrong but still that was not suppose to be his reaction especially in front of kids. Why solve an issue like that with so much violence?

      willie.viljoen.33 - 2012-09-14 23:38

So jy het toe gekyk hoe jou hond gebyt word? 1 byt maak nie 'n hond dood nie so as die honde wegin byt het is dit 'n ander saak....nog niemet n mes nie maar dalk 'n skok stok of peper gas.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 12:12

Ag asseblief esme.malan! Hou tog net op met rant en rave! Is jy dalk liewe Francoistjie se vrou of suster of vriendin?
