Johannesburg- A domestic violence incident ended in tragedy on Friday when the alleged perpetrator was shot and killed by police.

Captain Riana van Aarde said the man's wife had called the police to inform them of the domestic violence incident unfolding at their Pretoria North home.

The officers responded to the scene and entered the house. The man asked to get his wallet before leaving with the officers but instead returned with a gun.

He fired a shot at one police officer and narrowly missed him. The man again tried to shoot at the policeman but the officer managed to shoot at him first.

He died on the scene.

Van Aarde said according to police protocol, the incident would most likely be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
