Pretoria prisoner sets himself alight

Johannesburg - Prison authorities are investigating reports that a prisoner tried to set himself alight at the Pretoria Central prison.

Gauteng correctional services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said on Thursday that the 48-year-old prisoner used a mattress inside his cell to inflict burn wounds on himself.

He apparently did so because he was refused a transfer from Pretoria local prison to Boksburg prison.

"The prisoner sustained injuries on his right arm and chest and was rushed to the Kalafong hospital. He was discharged the same day."

He is serving 20 years for robbery.

"It is important to note that procedures and processes need to be followed when transferring inmates from one correctional facility to another," Morwane said.
