Pretoria woman takes ex to court

2012-11-09 10:50

Johannesburg - A Pretoria woman whose fiancée broke off their engagement has gone to court to claim back her contribution to their living expenses, it was reported on Friday.

Wanda Moller, 28, sued her ex Anthony Potgieter, 25, for R1.33m in the North Gauteng High Court, but they later reached a settlement which was made an order of the court, Beeld reported.

According to the newspaper, the settlement stated that Moller would withdraw her claim.

She would keep her townhouse in Centurion, and would buy Potgieter's share for R60 000. He could collect his furniture and other property. Each would pay their own legal fees.

In court papers, Moller said they agreed on September 25 2010 to marry, but Potgieter told her on June 18 2011 that he did not want to anymore. She claimed he was involved with another woman, but he denied this.

Moller said she had gone through emotional trauma and depression, and had to be medicated.

She claimed to have spent more than R30 000 on wedding arrangements, that her career advancement had taken a R100 000 knock, and that she had incurred R500 000 in damage to her dignity and status.

    At least she's not bitter

      marc.ross.965 - 2012-11-09 11:47

      Too sharp rsole. Lol.

      JaredVN - 2012-11-09 13:08

Excellent, @rsole. One might add that it's a good thing she's not so pathetic that her entire career, dignity, self-image and status in the community depend on a ring on her finger. Truly a liberated, independent woman. Or a bunny-boiler.

  • stanton.clarke - 2012-11-09 11:09

Aih, 500K for damage to her dignity and status.

  • briana.scott - 2012-11-09 11:30

OMW - imagine what she would have done to him if he had been crazy enough to marry her and that failed. Shameful.Dignity doesn't have a price tag. Damn fool.

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-11-09 11:31

So much for equality. I thought everyone was equal? So does this mean woman are only men's equal when it suites them? Men, be careful of the equal woman of the gold digging verity. They seem to be everywhere these days.

      kgomotso.mukwevho - 2012-11-09 12:50

legally speaking what happened to her is called bridge of promise she has a case. That is if she can proof beyond reasonably doubt that the man has indeed promised her marriage and along that way changed his mind.

      carla.vittori3 - 2012-11-09 16:22

@kgomotso - its "breach of promise" and all she has to do is prove on a balance of probabilities. But in any event, if she incurred expenses on the understanding that there was supposed to be a marriage and that marriage never happened she is entitled to claim it back from the person ending the engagement.

  • vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2012-11-09 11:31

oooh..i thought it said "Pretoria woman takes axe to court". Same meaning however

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-11-09 11:33

One of the reasons that prostitution should be legalised. This is a case of a professional slipping away with far more than was bargained for. Advice: Such a low life gets dealt with as follows. Marry her. Even if it it makes you bring up. Then plant and amass false evidence and eventually divorce her on YOUR terms.

  • marc.potgieter2 - 2012-11-09 11:35

R500 000 for her dignity...? If you are a classy chick, dignity costs a lot more. She must be a cheap-skate...

      carla.vittori3 - 2012-11-09 16:23

If you really were a professional and had any dignity at all you wouldn't have claimed for hurt feelings in the first place.

  • markus.ippy - 2012-11-09 11:43

And this is interesting how ?

      crracker.crackerr - 2012-11-09 11:56

It is both a public duty and an act of kindness to other potential unsuspecting victims.

Very interesting the direction that marriage it taking. I like the openmindedness... because some people just walk away from it all and count it all lost... She is trying to save what she can possibly get..

  • liezl.haramis.7 - 2012-11-09 13:47

Men are arrogant and naive. Women have proper careers and earn/contribute their "more than fair share" to a household. Should we always be making men rich and walk away when they are stuffing around? Who wants to put a price on a woman's emotional and physical contribution...

  • thabo.maatjie - 2012-11-09 13:57

Talk about a bitter woman! People cannot handle rejection and would probably do anything to medicate their pain. It's clear that the guy realised her money-loving attitude and the expensive life she wanted, hence he decided to quit. It's time she focus on regaining her dignity which money cannot even bring back but her attitude. Which dignity did she have before anyway, the same that brought her to rejection? She needs to now focus on healing and letting go because her fighting attitude will only prolong the healing process and bring anger, bitterness, frustrations, depression and bitterness. What will happen if she looses the case? Commit suicide maybe? Leave the guy and start your life afresh, learn from your mistakes which contributed to the break-up... fighting him for money will only expose your love for money and inability to handle rejection...
