Johannesburg - Mondeor High School principal Vangelia Nicolaou on Monday declined to comment on a report about alleged racist remarks made against black pupils at the school.

"I'm not allowed to give a comment," Nicolaou told Sapa.

Earlier, Gauteng education department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said she would comment later in the day once she had an update. Repeated attempts to get hold of her after midday were unsuccessful.

The Saturday Star reported that several pupils at the school accused the principal of telling black pupils they were "blackening the name of the school".

The remark was allegedly made at the school's assembly last week.

This happened after "Matric Day", in which many pupils threw water in buckets and eggs at each other in an "annual tradition" to bid farewell to matriculants.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) told Sapa five matriculants kicked two chickens to death at the school on Tuesday, the day before the start of matric preliminary exams.

Beeld reported that the chickens were used as rugby balls and that one chicken's feet were bound as the boys kicked it repeatedly.

Following this, the five went around the school with the two dead chickens to scare the other pupils.

Sekhonyane told The Star an update on disciplinary action against the pupils involved would be provided on Monday.
