Prison riot: Inmates still torching cells

2013-01-07 21:03

Johannesburg - Two warders at Groenpunt Prison in Deneysville were injured when inmates set part of the facility on fire on Monday, Free State police said.

"The warders were overpowered and beaten up by the inmates... they then set a section of the prison alight," spokesperson Constable Peter Kareli said. Some offices were also torched.

"The facility has been secured and no one is allowed to go in or leave. Inmates are still continuing to burn down cells.

"Blankets have also been set alight. There is smoke coming out of the premises."

There was no information as to whether any prisoners were injured.

"Details are still sketchy, but the information we have is that inmates refused to eat at around 16:00.

"Scuffles ensued and they attacked the warders and began to burn down the place," Kareli said.

Paramedics and firefighters were at the scene.

It is ver sad that things like this keeps on happening in our country. Many warders have paid with their life's i the past during similar incidents. Let's all pray for those innocent people having to endure through this night and chaos. There are many filies and innocent (and very scared) children staying on the Groenpunt Corectional Services premises. My brother is one of thos warders called out tonight. Please, let us keep each and every person in our thoughts and prayers tonight. We can only trust that justice be served on those guilty to all this chaos.

where are our amazing international reporters from e news??? No broadcast?

      jealbertyn - 2013-01-08 07:30

They were there last night. But let me tell you, go look at the 'roads' (hahaha) leading to groenpunt prison, it is disaterous. They have been working on these roads for years, with NO progress!!! There is only a stop and wait road riddled with potholes (from Vereeniging and Deneysville sides) So, if you don't travel with 4x4 vehicles, it is going to take you a while to ge there.........

  • chris.potgieter.73 - 2013-01-08 06:53

Ah but commentators let us not forget something! Zuma and company have to get the jails to 5 star quality because as soon as Helen Zille defeats the current crop of incumbent corrupt leaders she will bring them to trail. They will want to be in facilities that are like Nkandla! Yep time to bring in the Army to get these guys thugs subdued, chained in threes and made to repaint the building and fix the damage. They must also have five years added to their sentences.

  • sandor.l.varga - 2013-01-08 17:57

Hopefully nobody saving those inmates. Let them braai themself to well-done.
