Durban - Three men are on the run after tunnelling out of the holding cells at the Bellair Police station in Durban on Sunday.

Vusi Gumede, Bheki Nkosi and Siya Dlamini managed to dig a hole through the wall of their cell at the station which was large enough to crawl through.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that officers discovered that the three “dangerous criminals” were missing when doing a routine check on the detainees.

“Gumede was arrested for murder, Nkosi was detained for possession of a firearm and Dlamini was arrested for possession of stolen property.

“A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened at Bellair police station for investigation. These criminals are dangerous and we plead with the community not to try to apprehend them but contact the police as soon as possible,” Naicker added.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the escape.

“We will make sure that we catch and arrest these criminals, we will use all our resources and expertise to put them behind bars so that they can face the consequences of their actions,” she said.

Bellair police can be contacted on 031 451 2826 or any nearest police station and Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
