Pro-Israeli protest at parliament

2012-06-29 18:14

Cape Town - A group of over 100 people protested at Parliament on Friday against a proposal by Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies to label goods originating from Israel as made in "occupied Palestinian territories".

The protesters held aloft posters urging, among other things, "Justice for Israel".

According to an information brochure handed out during the protest, the trade and industry department planned to require products produced in areas under Israeli control - but envisaged as part of the 1947 UN partition plan to be part of a future Arab state - to be labelled "Produced in the occupied Palestinian territories".

"Aside from a number of technical flaws in promulgating and applying such a regulation, the decision to cast a spotlight on this particular case relating to Israel, in the absence of similar initiatives relating to a multitude of other disputed territories, indicates political pressure and exploitation," it said.

Labelling products "made in the occupied Palestinian territories" would also transform the status of the land from "disputed" to "occupied" and further undermine the importance of arriving at a negotiated settlement by the parties involved.

The protesters handed a jointly-issued memorandum from the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (SA), Bridges for Peace South Africa, Transformation Africa, and various other organisations, to African Christian Democratic Party MP Steve Swart and a representative of the trade and industry department.

The ACDP had joined in the peaceful demonstration together with individuals, churches, and Christian and Jewish groups.

Swart said Parliament exercised oversight over all actions by the executive and "we parliamentarians will definitely be monitoring the process" regarding the proposed regulation very closely.

He also undertook to ensure that a copy of the memorandum was forwarded to the chair of the portfolio committee on trade and industry.

"We join all organisations in praying and working for a peaceful resolution to the challenges in the Middle East," he said.

South Africa, with its history and example of peaceful resolution, could play a meaningful role in assisting in bringing peace to the Middle East.

"We have diplomatic ties with Israel and recognise its sovereignty. Yet our government makes no effort to conceal the fact that it supports the Palestinian cause.

"One seldom hears an unbiased statement in Parliament. We would urge the government to desist from taking sides if it truly wishes to assist in resolving issues in the Middle East," Swart said.

"South Africa, with its history and example of peaceful resolution, could play a meaningful role in assisting in bringing peace to the Middle East." I am so tired of hearing lies like this. In any case,Palestinian IS disputed territoriality that Israel has won -rightfully- and needs because it's got 500 million angry Arabs around it whom want to push the nation into to ocean :( The Arab league has it in their constitution that their mission is to destroy Zionism. The ANC government is messed up as usual. They should remain neutral. I HOPE JEWISH MONEY FLOWS INTO OPPOSITION PARTIES :)

How is it a lie? The apartheid system in Israel is 10 times worse than what is was in SA. Israel has a lot to learn. In the mean time the people of Palestine continue to suffer every day at the hands of the Israeli oppressors. This has to stop.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-06-30 23:10

There is no apartheid in Israel. Israel is a democracy for all its people and there is no legislated discrimination seperating Israeli Jews, Christians and Muslims, or black or white for that matter. The West Bank and Gaza is not Israel. It will stop when Pestinians acceed to Israels terms for peace. Palestinians lost this territory in the 1967 war and will be returned on Israels terms and conditions only. This is the law of war. Terms are 1. Jerusalem is ennexed and the undivided capital city of Israel 2. there will be Jews living in any future Palestinian state, 3. Pestinians must recognise Israel and be peaceful. 4. Future Pestinian state will be demilitarised. That's all folks.

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-01 00:18

Nonsense, international law holds that you cannot win territory by conquest. Full stop. This is one of the primary reasons why the soviet union collapsed, because it could not legally occupy and annex territories through violence. It strikes me that a lot of zionists speak about the laws of war and similar crap. There is nothing like that. There is international law, geneva convetions etc, but no law of war. I think the last time someone seriously thought about entertaining a law of war was the soviets and that led to fail. I guess i dont have to mention the Nazi's - or do I?

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-07-01 08:31

Nonsense. When a country is attacked by another and the attacking country is repulsed beyond the attacked countries borders, positions are held to the advantage of the victor. To the victor goes the spoils of war. In all conflicts, the loser is made to pay reparations. Why don't you go shout at Turkey who have occupied and annexed Northern Cyprus, with no war event. This is stolen land.

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-02 01:24

I'd post a comment and shout at turkey if this was a discussion about the turkish occupation of cyprus. but its not. init. regardless, turkey is not making money from its occupation of cyprus. init. and no, the soviet union won the second world war ( 50 years of occupation of most of europe counts as a big win in anyones book). everyone else came second, or worse - lost. But u know what, ultimately they fell apart cause of little Estonias BIG realisation that there was no such thing as to the victors go the spoils of war. certainly not in terms of international law. full stop.and all estonia did was to sing. estonia sang the soviet union into the ground. perhaps there is one law for zionists and another for everyone else? I doubt it.

      Enjoy singing then Frank.

smilification , Jewish money is going to the opposition already for a decade or more . Let me rectify you , stolen property remains stolen no matter what and its NOT a disputed territory .

      smili.fication - 2012-06-29 18:55

Stolen property? Well, if I disagree with you that it's stolen then it obviously disputed now isn't it?

      smili.fication - 2012-06-30 09:41

and still got their asses handed to them. And Palestine is probably the most successful Arab area in that whole godforsaken area? Why? Because Israel built universities, schools, hospitals, and ect. Arabs are attend the schools as Israel, the same hospitals, everything except the same temple. You are a ignorant little p&%ck.

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-06-30 12:21

smilification - you are a liar. they have never buil universities, they have detroyed the hospitals. and if u think killing your own kind is cool, well then we know what that makes you

      rob.baggaley - 2012-06-30 12:44

Palestinians are useless underachievers, the scourge of the arab world. Little Israel kicked Arab butt big time in 67 & 73. It's THEIR hard won territory. The spoils of war. To hell with these useless victim mentality palestinians. Islam is a nast, nasty system.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-06-30 23:13

We do not care what you think. we will take care of ourselves first from now on. Sorry if you dont like it.

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-01 00:20

Take care of yourselves? You deluded clown. Israel runs at a loss and is completely subsidised by the US of A. They stop funding you and u are going to be in very big trouble....

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-07-01 08:33

Israel is quite self-sufficient, and the funding from America is for military advancements.

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-06-29 19:00

Not only is Rob Davies a dumb f*ck.. he also looks like a piece of pissed on sh*t paper!! Robbie go find something useful to do like playing in the traffic!!

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-06-30 02:53

jeesh gerald get with the program. u are not very bright it seems if u cannot even sit tight on the subject line

  • Rory Neil Price - 2012-06-29 20:20

Israel does more for the sick in the Arab world than any other country, the beauty of it all, is that the only democracy any Arab country understands is through the barrel of a gun, how many Arabs have been killed since the Arab Uprising, and believe me the fun in Egypt is far from over, oh well blame it on Apartheid

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-06-30 02:47

How does israel do more for arab countries than any other? what nonsense!

  • thea.erasmus.7 - 2012-06-29 21:44

We know the ANC has no idea of justice ie the farm killings, corruption and tries very hard to still tell the world they worthy of Madiba glory. Ofcourse they will jump on the " hate Israel" wagon. Shameful!

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-06-30 02:50

what the hell does this have to do with labelling goods made in occupied territory as goods made in occupied territory?

      smili.fication - 2012-06-30 09:49

Frank you make no sense. It's sad to find idiots like you roaming the internet.

  • Nasser - 2012-06-30 09:02

I agree with the Dept of Trade & Industry on labeling goods emanating from occupied territories. Denmark is doing the same. Its a step in the right direction. I think Israel should isolated the way apartheid Safrica was isolated.

      smili.fication - 2012-06-30 09:50

Nassee - Let me see , your either Muslim or Arab?

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-30 12:47

The world is a fickel place Anti-Semitism hasn't gone away; it's merely morphed into hatred of Israel. The Jews will never be "loved". The world will love the Jews greatly were they to roll over and die, and that is not going to happen. I'm with Machiavelli -- it is far, far better to be feared than to be loved. which is why I will support them to the best of my ability. There are 50 Arab/Muslim nations. There is only one Jewish nation - and it is the size of the Kruger National Park.

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-30 12:56

A few weeks ago Deputy Foreign Minister EBRAHIM EBRAHIM wrote to Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Mr Gerrit Van Rensburg, trying to discourage him from attending a conference on Drought Resistant Crops in Israel. The W. Cape is a Province NOT controlled by the Ruling ANC and it’s about the only one functioning Province we have. There are many Muslims in ANC and no Jews, to best of my knowledge... despite the large number of them who were part of the "struggle”. The Muslims therefore exert a big influence in SA-Israel relations. The Black Population are screaming out for proper service delivery and jobs and advice on agriculture. Israel could really help in all three apart from many other needs they have, but the ANC government won’t take advantage of the help that Israel can render. Mr Rob Davies is from the Communist Wing of the ANC, his anti-Israel bias are to be expected.

      Ayanda Mathunjwa - 2012-06-30 18:23

Couldn't agree more, the Zionist state of Israel should stop expanding settlements in Westbank and give back all the land they have stolen over the years, South Africa is doing the right thing, I wish they would go as far as stopping imports from the racist state of Israel!

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-06-30 23:23

Why, are Jews not allowed to live in arab lands? That is apartheid. BTW, so if goods are labelled 'made in occupied territories of Palestine', does this mean people must buy these goods or boycott them? Will it make a difference if the goods are produced by Jews in Palestine territories or Arabs in palestine territories? Or do Arab palestinians not produce anything for export? What is the point of the label?

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-01 00:39

Larry, Jews are allowed to live in arab nations and some continue to do so. In morrocco jews are much loved and protected, indeed no one will harm a jew for fear of ostracism. The same is true in other countries - tho not all. I fear that in israel too arabs are far from feeling free. Many jews left their arab homes in the 60's and 70's - they were not expelled - they wanted to go to a place where they could feel 'at home'. What is interesting is that the predominantly european ashkenazi jews did not really accept them and for years there were issues with integration, with the ashkenazi jews treating their more arab bretheren with disdain and considering them to be little more than animals, in fact it has been noted that the inclusion of the yehudi jews into the state of israel almost caused the state to fail. In fact many of them got so sick and tired of the racism they faced in the new israel that they chose instead to go to america and europe. I love the whitewash zionists/nationalists apply to their obviously pockmarked and blemished histories - as if any would believe. Like those wars are claimed to have been started by arabs - in fact the historical facts are that israel invaded them first and then blamed them. Nationalism = FAIL. U might as well go and shave your heads now and get some big black boots, cause thats what nationalists are.

      frank.mahler1 - 2012-07-02 22:48

zionism is nationalism. full stop. It shares its ideological, historical roots with other forms of european nationalism. patriotism is the final refuge of the scoundrel - samuel johnson
