Cape Town - The investigation into the alleged role of Elmario Maasdorp in the brutal death of Valencia Farmer has been completed, the State has confirmed.

Maasdorp appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of murder and rape for the killing of the 14-year-old in 1999.

The accused, a father of two, last month decided not to apply for bail and after initially opting to conduct his own defence, he has since applied for legal representation.

Farmer was attacked after being led to an abandoned house in Eucalyptus Street, Eersterivier, on June 26, 1999. She was raped, repeatedly stabbed and her throat was slit.

She crawled into the street where a neighbour found her. Before she died in Tygerberg Hospital, she told police who her attackers were.

Maasdorp was arrested last month after new evidence was obtained by investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Clarke.

He was arrested shortly after the murder, but was later released.  He was 21 at the time.

Six men were initially arrested. Only three were convicted and sentenced. Glenville Faro and Franklyn Roberts received two life sentences each. They failed to get parole this year and said they would apply again early next year.

Russel van Wyk, who was 16 when he was sentenced in March 2001, got 23 years in jail. Both of his parole applications, in 2013 and 2014, were rejected.

Maasdorp and another suspect were released because they could not be linked to the crime.

A sixth man was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

The case against Maasdorp was postponed to Wednesday, October 21 and has been transferred to the Blue Downs Regional Court.
