Probe into Waterkloof killers' party continues

2014-02-17 08:39

Johannesburg - Two of the "Waterkloof Four" killers re-arrested will be held for 72 hours while an investigation into their jail cell party at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria continues, the correctional services department said on Monday.

"There is nothing new at this stage. The investigation is still continuing," spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said on Monday.

Wolela could not confirm if the two were being held at the same prison.

Convicted killers Frikkie du Preez and Christoff Becker were re-arrested on Sunday just four days after being released on parole. Becker, Du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk, and Reinach Tiedt were released on Tuesday after being jailed for beating a homeless man to death in Pretoria in 2001.

On Sunday, Wolela said they were being held for allegedly smuggling alcohol and having a party inside the prison.

This came after a video of them was posted on You Tube showing Du Preez and Becker allegedly drinking, and using a cellphone in a jail cell.

‘A nice weekend here in jail’

Wolela said the investigation would involve watching the video, interviewing the two parolees and speaking to those responsible for security on the day.

In the video Becker says in Afrikaans: "It's a nice weekend in jail here. We're having a great time... We managed to get a bottle of something."

Pop music plays throughout the video. The cell is shown equipped with a sink, a table with a computer on it, and a pot plant with heart-shaped leaves. Becker takes photos of himself with a cellphone while posing topless in front of a mirror.

Throughout the video, which runs for just under four minutes, Becker constantly pulls on his shorts to expose more of his red-banded briefs.

He stands up to flex his muscles, does some dance moves and plays with his belly button, which is shown in an extended close-up.

A photo on the computer screen shows a bottle of J&B whisky and Johnny Walker Red Label, which one of the men says "Francois" gave them.

Good> And jail those warders whom were bribed also.

      Fritz Brits - 2014-02-17 08:50

      nothing like a bad friend.

      Bheki Dladla - 2014-02-17 09:14

Always knew that something is just never gona be right with these guys. they should just be in jail period, they are clearly taking justice very lightly... as for those who made all these happen, its appalling

      Ngqukuva Mthombo - 2014-02-17 09:18

I'm just speechless now, "A sad state of Rainbow nation" freedom everywhere!

      Willem de Haan - 2014-02-17 09:26

White, black, coloured, male, female, rich or poor, makes no difference. Bad, inherently bad, and as such, vermin preying on the decent majority of society, they deserve to be permanently removed from decent society. This incident only confirms what we knew all along when they were charged and the details of the crime was exposed in court - they are outlaws who should have been taken out to the desert and left there. But we speak of "human rights" and then erroneously think that something with a human face is a human being. Grave error. As is proved again. Mad dogs are put down. This one is a mad dog. Leave it alive and it will bite more.

      Kobus Hattingh - 2014-02-17 09:32

      Ygivadamn - 2014-02-17 09:40

imagine if all criminals were allowed to have smartphones in prison....rapists, murderers ect...will be googling their twitters, until you hashtag all over facebook until you smiley face

      Rupeshhari - 2014-02-17 10:18

The best thing for these kids to do is to join EFF. It so happens EFF is looking for white members and these vermins seem to have the right IQ for membership there.

      Etienne Nortje - 2014-02-17 10:20

Alicia you are quoting the words of the band Simple Plan, the song Welcome to my life written by them, not a schoolboy. Don't believe all those chain emails and Facebook messages you get

      Peter Tracey - 2014-02-17 10:21

Drugs, Pop music, Johnny Walker Red, flat screen tv’s, strippers, firearms - it seems like one can get all these inside our prisons, what a bloody disgrace our justice system is!

      Chrono Man - 2014-02-17 11:38

Christoff Becker did not attend school at Waterkloof High.

      Chrono Man - 2014-02-17 12:37

@Alicia, some more rubbish for you. His father removed him from the school after Grade 9 probably to save himself some embarrassment.

  • Andrew Terr - 2014-02-17 08:44

Guess 'Francois' is shaking in his warders outfit.

  • ThabangBonang - 2014-02-17 08:45

Here I am comparing life in prison and outside prison and it seems prison can be better. In prison you get Computers, cellphones, flower pots, free food, free water and electricity, free accommodation, free gym, alcohol, etc. No wonder some freed prisoners would do anything to go back to jail.

      Reality - 2014-02-17 08:48

And you do not even have to work or pay taxes in jail.

      Johnny Smith - 2014-02-17 10:01

I think it should be time that prison resorts be graded. This is definitely a 5 star resort.

      Ygivadamn - 2014-02-17 10:03

@skrap i think the point here is ...mmmmmm YOU SHUNDT GET THEM AT ALL in prison

      Nosiphom Mazibuko - 2014-02-17 10:19

      And you vote!!

      Chrono Man - 2014-02-17 11:40

And you can go to jail for a makeover so that when you get out you can look like Boy George.

  • Khutso Bokaba - 2014-02-17 08:48

Shame... What a stupid move!!! Money can buy you everything... Now send them back to jail..!

      No Sugarcoating - 2014-02-17 09:53

Agreed, but remember those who received the money are just as guilty, if not more guilty. Bragging shows no remorse, maybe a stint at the high security section of Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town is the medicine needed to wipe the smiles off their faces.

      Ygivadamn - 2014-02-17 10:05

if only money could buy them a brain...hey

  • Marlon Roebeck - 2014-02-17 08:51

  • Sam Sankambe - 2014-02-17 08:51

  • Alcide Herveaux - 2014-02-17 08:57

OK, I believe that they most likely drank. Drugs and alcohol are rife in prisons, you must be insane to believe it is a clinical environment free of all these vices. Besides that, these guys are so arrogant, they should not have been given parole in any case.

  • Winston Whitehead - 2014-02-17 09:02

They need to be kept locked up, but in a more secure prison

  • Gareth Morgan - 2014-02-17 09:03

      Lazarus MP Sekopa - 2014-02-17 10:31

How do u know they are ANC members?

      Tammy Maubane - 2014-02-17 13:14

What proof do you have that the warders are ANC members?

  • Raymond Randall - 2014-02-17 09:13

  • Anton Meiring - 2014-02-17 09:16

These guys and their warders are making a mockery of our justice system.. but then again the system is a joke.

  • FrankMan - 2014-02-17 09:27

what did they do wrong? everything happened in prison..the wrong doers are correctional service officails....hw did they got that freedom of video taping God

  • Given Martin - 2014-02-17 09:27

This has nothing to do with race, correctional services should take a centre stage, cos I don't think these boys were the first people to party in jail, but they were the only iodits who filmed it, and shared it. So lets stop calling each other names and shifting the blame to Zuma/ANC.

      Colleen Vandenberg Louw - 2014-02-17 09:34

It has everything to do with race. If it had not then the powers that be would go after the murders of farmers with equal passion. Animal Farm again, all animals are created equal but some are more equal than others.

  • Tina Butler - 2014-02-17 09:32

If the alcohol is in the form of a picture on the computer screen, it's probably a virtual gift. In the real world, we often joke around like that, sending each other virtual gifts. Stop getting hysterical about everything.

  • Rimmel Brimmel - 2014-02-17 09:32

Yeah, this is a correctional facility failure. Stop blaming these idiots. If I was in jail, and I could get my hands on a bottle JW then I would take it and have a party myself.

      Given Martin - 2014-02-17 10:09

True that, we'll all do the same if we were in their shoes. if you can afford it pay for that luxury, do your time but don't film it

      Phume Hlathini - 2014-02-17 12:12

@ Rimmel, yes I would do the same. but I wouldn't be an idiot and film it and post it on Yo tube. IQ - non existence clearly. they must go back there and rot in jail, along with the guards who were incharge!!

  • Meikie Isabel Bokaba - 2014-02-17 09:33

Amen! I've always heard of these things happening in prison & I thought it was a joke. My word. What is the point of going to jail if it is fun there. Corruption is down-rooted in our system, I mean those bottles can be used as weapons for heavens sake, do these warders ever think!!!

  • Nicole Van Rooi - 2014-02-17 09:33

I don't think it's got to do with race.I think these guys are just so selfish and and without guilt that they forget to see the reality of their actions.Correctional services are to blame as well, how did these guys get hold of a cellphone and alcohol? This shows how unfair our justice system is.I can't blame these guys for wanting to move on with their lives and having a great time but they do it in a disrespectful way. I have no faith in our government but i do believe what you sow you'll reap cause we have a fair creator.

  • Winston Whitehead - 2014-02-17 09:36

They were stupid to post the video on u tube.

  • Etienne Nortje - 2014-02-17 09:37

Becker misunderstood the term "model prisoner" - that is why he was wearing all the branded clothes and sunglasses, making videos of his physique and saying he wants to go to Hollywood, and lets not forget the attitude!

  • Amatambo - 2014-02-17 09:40

My word - this story hitting the headlines because the two were "partying" the day before their release, and videos taken with a cellphone - so that means two forbidden items in the cell - a cellphone and booze. Now - are these two the ONLY ones who have ever had cellphones and liquor illegally? Or is it because they happen to be WHITE while - if the prison officials had to do a proper search of every occupied cell, more of the same would be found, adding to that probably a collection of some nasty hardware like knives, for example, BUT with this difference - belonging to BLACKS who are considered ROYAL GAME in this country and do virtually what they like, but WHITES are being villified at every possibility to show how "EVIL" they are??? And please DON'T try and convince me otherwise - WHITES = BAD; BLACK = GOOD, according to a certain section of the population who - in actual fact - commit more crimes, regardless of where in the world they are - USA prisons is a shining example... And no, I do NOT condone what those "Klofie" morons did - murder is murder, unless in self-defence when your own life is at stake (which happens often enough in this country. But how many BLACK murderers/rapists/robbers get parole unconditionally and once on the streets continue their lives of crime??? Nah - be fair, the justice system in this country stinks... punish the two who have been rearrested, but also punish others who flaunt the prison regulations...

      Katleho Mdlalose Cindi - 2014-02-17 10:27

get over yourself, this was just a case of people abusing the prison system.

  • Kenny K - 2014-02-17 09:40

These idiots can star in the next Dumb and Dumberer movie...they are arrogant in the extreme..put them back behind bars, lets keep these Pretoria clutchplates off the streets !!

  • Naas Du Plessis - 2014-02-17 09:43

If these okes can smuggle stuff in imagine what goes into the jails daily. Losers!!

  • Chuck Morris - 2014-02-17 09:44

Send them back finish term. Some people never learn.

  • nkosikhonorman.ludidi - 2014-02-17 09:49

Lol but the guys were enjoying themselves so what is wrong

      Nicole Van Rooi - 2014-02-17 09:54

What's wrong is that they have a cellphone in jail which is illegal,as well as alcohol,They showing disrespect to the dead guy's family and so many other South african's that was victims of crime and our unfair justice system,

      nkosikhonorman.ludidi - 2014-02-17 10:12

Thanks Rooi, now I understand,,,u not like those who just thumbs down not explaining

      Adele Coetzee - 2014-02-17 10:22

  • Antoinette Vd Merwe Weideman - 2014-02-17 09:55

  • Stephan Potgieter - 2014-02-17 09:57

As jy dom is moet jy suffer

  • Marais Van den Berg - 2014-02-17 09:58

I do not condone the behaviour of these two idiots. And it's not exactly rocket-science that ons should stay within the rules on the eve of being released on parole. And further, to post the video of themeselves breaking the rules on YT borders on insane arrogance. BUT, I must ask myself, what happens in all the others cell?. This probe/investigation that is being launched should be much, much wider.

  • Given Martin - 2014-02-17 10:18

This article is about two idiot, who still needs to be locked up. We all seem to agree on that, but going thru your comments, it's shows rainbow nation is nothing but a dream. There's soo much racial tension in this country, people hate each other. a beautiful country with so much potential, but the people makes you sick and are holding us back

  • gerriev3 - 2014-02-17 10:43

Let them sit the whole 12 years they are not sorry for what they have done !!!

  • Zama Mvulane - 2014-02-17 10:45

What probe? What for? You must have the video by now and just in case you missed it, it is all over the internet! Keep those guys where they belong and fire someone and I don't care who - the Commissioner, a warder or even the cleaner! These guys just took a leak all over your faces and you still want to "undertake a probe"!

  • Henry Dludlu - 2014-02-17 10:53

The signs were there the day this bunch was released. They were very cocky for people who just been released from prison. Not to even get into the remorse part, there was no evidence of it.Now it shows why?

  • Hangs - 2014-02-17 11:19

Jails a playground. There is more rot than this

  • Heather Botes - 2014-02-17 13:08

Prison time in SA is not punishment, like a party sitting doing bugger all all day, you get 3 meals a day and watch tv, what a life. Reading this one ask - how well were these people monitored in prison for officials to recommend parole - clearly not at all.
