Protector to probe 'Zumaville'

2012-10-17 22:28

Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will investigate the development of a R2bn town in President Jacob Zuma's home village of Nkandla, her office said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said the investigation into the project would be conducted separately from the investigation into the development of Zuma's Nkandla residence.

"The public protector is investigating the matters separately," she said in an sms.

Afriforum said earlier on Wednesday that Madonsela would investigate the Umlalazi-Nkandla Smart Growth Centre project, which was dubbed "Zumaville".

The planned new town would be constructed 3km from Zuma's home in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

The government would reportedly direct more than R1bn of taxpayers' money into the development, while a further R1bn would be raised from the private sector.

The project was the brainchild of Masibambisane, a rural development organisation which Zuma chaired.

"It is clear that Zuma will derive great benefit from the project in his personal capacity," Afriforum chief executive Ernst Roets said in a statement.

He said the public prosecutor had been asked to probe the matter because the circumstances amounted to an abuse of power by Zuma.

"The president is wearing three hats," Roets said.

"He is the head of the executive authority of government, he is chairman of Masibambisane, the government's partner in this matter; and as a citizen with a personal interest in Nkandla, he is also a beneficiary in this matter."

On 7 October Madonsela confirmed she would investigate the development of Zuma's personal residence in Nkandla.

On 5 October, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi said the upgrades at the residence were similar to those made at the homes of former presidents. He declined to disclose how much money had been spent on the security and other construction work.

Reports have estimated the cost of the work to be between R203m and R247m.

How much longer can this brave Lady weather the storm that threatens her from the ruling party Elites?

      lownabester - 2012-10-17 23:02

Thats what I would love to know, She is one Classy Lady and bloody clever.

      ChristelleJames - 2012-10-17 23:05

And however said she is working on instruction by Zuma, must now retract their words. This woman is a pure example of honesty, integrity, dignity - Oh why even bother - some people do not even know what that means!!

      sani.ghana.3 - 2012-10-17 23:20

This Thuli woman is very busy, when the ANC is out of power then she can drink some tea

      JohnB - 2012-10-18 02:46

I love her integrity to the office she bears, the only one with &alls, however I think she's headed for career a change, what a pity. Zippers Shuffle comes to mind.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-10-18 05:45

My question is, why only now? If she is as 'above-board' as she seems, then either she is unbelievably brave, or 'they' might just manufacture an excuse to demote her.... Since Zuma has no respect for women, I am not sure he will take this ....errr well? (its the softest word I can think of right now).

      ben.spreeth - 2012-10-18 06:53

Problem is: Hofmeyr also did some probing into corruption when he headed S.I.U. What happened to him ? How long will she stay in this job if she keeps on doing it well ?

      beverly.young3 - 2012-10-18 07:07

I looked her up...a rare woman and brave.......(pasting here) Thulisile Madonesla is South Africa's Public Protector. She is also a Human Rights Lawyer and Equality Expert. Madonesla is one of the 11 technical experts who helped the Constitutional Assembly to draft the final constitution in 1994 and 1995. Previously, she was a member of a Task Team that prepared constitutional inputs for the Gauteng Province of the African National Congress. She presented the final document at the African National Congress' Gauteng Constitutional Conference in 1995

@wesley, the only way she can be removed is by parliament passing a vote of 66.6% on a charge of incompetence. As the cancER does not have this majority, and very few opposition parties will back a vote to get rid of her, she is untouchable.

  • SharonE - 2012-10-17 22:40

I think she must quit her job and become actively involved in politics. She can start her own party and become a true force to be reckoned with. At the moment she is bogged down by red tape and office politics. THULI FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Unless she gets a complaint that's not anonymous that affects the public or negatively affects public interest (hence her job description) she won't bother. It has to be specific. I don't get your point though. Farms? Why. Shouldn't it be under the rural development mandate under the failing \land reform\ policies? Although it may affect thousands of claimants it does not fall under \public interest\.

      jason.wolff3 - 2012-10-18 06:48

The big issue is not whether the president is black or white but whether he is executing his duties proficiently. Until people can see that and judge a person by his actions and not the color of his skin we have hope until then politicians will continue being inefficient and corrupt and the poor will suffer.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-18 09:40

Isando.nesikela, don't you think it is time you start seeing people as being people and not as black or white?. Believe me if you look past the colour of the skin, we are all humans trying to live our lives. You are no different from me and to surrender to that colour image in your mind is a proper waste of time. If you are happy with Zuma be my guest, but don't insult others because they have seen the light and you are still groping around in darkness.

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-10-18 00:56

Thuli is setting a good precedence, she must investigate all the dealings regarding these developments and make her findings public. As a taxpayer I have a right to know how my money is spent, if its for a right cause to check if its being used optimally. I for one am a proponent of developing rural areas into business harbors, one must not forget that New York, London, Paris, Joburg etc started as villages. Urbanisation can be great if we bring development to the villages instead of taking villagers to cities, this can avoid urban decay which is characterising our cities. The DA won't have the so called problem of immigrants from Eastern Cape. In so doing however everything must be above board, spending so much on Zuma's house while villagers don't even have roads, clinics, schools its an insult and the report must advise us why it is done. While at it Thuli must investigate deals made by previous governments that are milking taxpayers, like why does BHP pay less than 40cents per kwh? How does it benefit the state and the public at large? We also want to know property transactions that took place between the apartheid gvt and certain individuals just before the demise of apartheid gvt in the 1990s whereby tracks of land changed hands for a song in some cases where 99year leases at R1 per year we entered especially in Stellenbosch. We will never get rid of corruption if we don't trace it back to its origin and nip it from there. Get the roots and the whole tree will collapse!

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-18 08:05

I don't know your Stellenbosch and or R1 references, but if true it must be investigate. I agree with you on all other as well. I grew up in a poorer house hold and were taught to be honest, hardworking, respectful to ALL and clean at all times. The reward was, the sad day my dad died, to see how at peace a person is when you lived your life like that. Is this possible that you ask? I don't think so, but we now have the chance to stand together and make sure we will not one day, again, as for the same.

      David Steyn - 2012-10-18 07:54

you are right charity does begin at home as long as you are charitable with your own money.

      Andrea - 2012-10-18 08:06

Yes, Ayanda, go see if your Grade 1 teacher will take you back now, you need some lessons in basic grammar and spelling. It starts at home.

  • johannes.modise2 - 2012-10-18 07:32

Our society are suffering, unemployed rates is going up every day but he just took our money and spend it at KZN,no second term for him please. Actually he must resign before the Election Day. Since being a president he never contribute any single thing to our country, he fail to do what our president Mandela told him to do.

  • Bafana Joseph - 2012-10-18 07:45

she will find nothing against her Boss these people play around with us

      dumisani.makhaye.1 - 2012-10-18 09:37

  • lulama.mbelwa - 2012-10-18 07:47

To think this is the same man who is mocked daily about only having STD 2, but see how much he's draining our country its shocking. How can one man be allowed so much power, but yes we the people who voted him in power and we ripping the rewards of it. Zuma is selfish and does not care about the people but himself and he does not deserve a second term. But it doesn't look like he's going anywhere.

  • nkosi.khumalo.33 - 2012-10-18 07:50

Why is the Public Protector overstepping her mandate??? Is she also implying, like the City Press, that Nkandla isn't allowed to benefit from rural development?

      sally.lewitt - 2012-10-19 04:04

      Oh Get a life!

  • Bongeka - 2012-10-18 07:51

Oh Gosh, my word, what is happening in South Africa? Thuli, please watch your back. This is too damn much. What are we going to do? Thuli, would you mind if we vote for you to be our next president? I can't see another one more suitable than you. You go girl.

  • angela.nair.3 - 2012-10-18 08:01

I hope Thuli succeeds in this quest! I cannot see her come to any conclusion in Nkandlagate... They wont let her. She will be hounded out of office - she will have fingers pointed at her - she will be found to be arrogant - she will be called biased. In fact every negative force will be against her while she tries to unravel the ANC's corrupt ways. In fact she will have to rake her way through the muck they have built around themselves. The arrogance and stupidity of Zuma never ceases to amaze me... Here is a man who squanders our tax money - and then has the audacity to tell CEO's to take wage cuts? The CEO's are part of the economy that fills the coffers! South Africa is a Republic, there should be no tribal favours and definately no Royalty. "The people shall govern" Now thats a load of crap - we have a one state party and they shall govern us until Jesus comes - or self destruction - whichever comes first!!!

  • harald.voney - 2012-10-18 08:05

The ANC are making waves to get rid of her, just like the Scorpions... But, I think they and her are protected in our consitution!! Maybe we have a chance...

  • native.rsa - 2012-10-18 08:08

Then the Shower dom kop will teLl people to freeze their salaries I suppose this BS was always going to happen from someone who is master in bribery and corruption I sure wish he is voted out in Bloem and procecuted after that, his time is coming iether this year or after 5 years

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-10-18 10:06

Roiboss, I am a struggle veteran also. But that doesn't give me the right to steal from the people. It isn't the amount of money that make you worthy, it is what you do and are that make you an upstanding human being. Your President failed in every catagory of what the struggle was all about. But be my guest, if this is what you are satisified with then keep living with the knowledge that you support a man who takes from you and gives nothing in return.

  • native.rsa - 2012-10-18 08:11

Now we know why he wanted the secrecy bill so badly

      Andrea - 2012-10-18 08:31

I think you just hit the nail on the (shower)head!

  • rhett.deklerk - 2012-10-18 08:29

Ok so the story here is about the possability of one group gaining? Zumaville - kinda says it all...

  • Michael - 2012-10-18 08:30

Ernst Roets, lives in a well developed area, it took a descision to have Pretoria, why must rural area remain under developed, this is an act of racism actualy.

  • obadia.segwape - 2012-10-18 08:35
