Protest closes Western Cape highway

2012-09-10 08:38

Cape Town - About 100 people blockaded a portion of the N1 highway in Touws River on Monday morning to protest against poor service delivery, Western Cape police said.

Warrant Officer November Filander said the highway was closed at Touws River because of burning tyres and cement blocks on the road.

He said the group had been protesting since 05:00 over housing.

Motorists from Laingsburg and Cape Town were asked to use alternative routes.

Police were monitoring the protest.

Can we have ONE day without service delivery protests please? Tomorrow when I open the news the same thing again... And the next day and so the whole week as well! Time for change is NOW! Vote anyone except ANC!!!!

      andres.dewet - 2012-09-10 09:00

@Sanda: Touws River is in the Breede Valley Municipality. We voted the ANC out of local govt only in 2011. In Apr 2011, just prior to the elections, the ANC well-knowing they were going to loose in May, passed a budget amendment leaving the next administration cashless for infrastructure and housing for a full year! Yes, they sabotaged the budget to cripple the incoming DA. I WAS IN THOSE MEETINGS! I saw it with my own eyes. So yes, the ANC is blameless and your sarcasm is on point... NOT.

      fussed.anderson - 2012-09-10 09:15

Why not build a seperate highway just for the protesters. Then you can put your toll on that road. Then make protesters pay the toll for road usage

      alan.jerrold - 2012-09-10 09:24

@annman - so good to hear the real truth about the ANC. They care nothing for the poor, only about their own power - and thus sabotage the efforts of people like the DA who ARE helping the poor big time as far as finances allow. What a horrible, pathetic, crooked government the ANC are. For the good of SA they need to be thrown out as soon as possible.

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-09-10 09:40

Some poeple are just plain stupid. Yes it maybe that their protest is staged and not real just to smear the DA government as the DA has been saying; or it maybe genuine; in either case to suggest that people be killed by using live bullets is a proof of how narrow minded some people are!

      andres.dewet - 2012-09-10 09:46

@JAbu: Agree. They have closed a road, but crowd control and lethal force are two VERY different concepts. You can't just go around shooting people for closing a road. I don't condone violent protest nor public chaos, but suggesting lethal force to disperse a crowd is also not on.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-09-10 10:10

This is part of the ANC's policy to make the WC ungovernable - ironically the WC is the best run province by a country mile...

  • SharonE - 2012-09-10 08:47

Where is the logic in preventing the people whose tax money will be used to pay for housing from going to work? These protestors don't think further than the noses on their faces!!

      christopher.shining - 2012-09-10 09:26

      and fat...

      ddnjozela - 2012-09-10 09:31

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-09-10 08:48

Burn Burn Trash Trash Smash we go again. Have these people got nothing better to do. South Africa is fast becoming a land of the burning tyres. This has now been orchestrated by....................... need I ask.

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-09-10 08:48

When will these people wake up to the fact that the ANC is useless. Burning tyres wont remove them, only the Vote will get the changes that they want.

Well it's apparent that these idiots have no employment and is just a useless burden on our economy.

      anver.oosthuizen - 2012-09-10 11:11

its clear that u hav no idea whts goin on in our town..and frankly most of these idiots ur refering to hav a genuine plight for work and housing....

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-09-10 12:16

These 'idiots' hold the key to your destiny through their votes. Maybe the real idiots are the ones who sit in their fancy offices and homes and criticise and belittle the majority of the people who are less fortunate. These people are generally used as pawns by influential people keen on boosting their political agendas. I think that our anger is misdirected.

how long is it going to take south africa to totally buckle, in fighting and corruption within the anc is tearing south africa up, and the uneducated masses just carry on voting blindly, cause they believe in clowns like malema and lamola, the future heads of sa. hopefully the anc split, which seems inevitable, and hopefully the few good go to da and take their support with but that wont happen, we will have another cope to deal with

  • iceman196 - 2012-09-10 09:17

  • thys.reeder - 2012-09-10 09:22

The sad thing is that the puppet-masters are fully aware of the economical impacts of these "protests".

  • steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-09-10 09:27

Just another ploy by the cANCer to try and upset the only working province in the country. The DA is the only viable solution for this country's woes.

  • julius.hond - 2012-09-10 10:00

How early did they get up to protest?

  • Rodant Andrews - 2012-09-10 10:24
