Johannesburg- A firefighter sustained injuries after being stoned by protesters in the Mzimhlope Hostel in Soweto.

The incident happened on Wednesday night, said Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

It was not immediately clear how serious the firefighter's injuries were.

Mulaudzi said the attackers were protesting against power cuts in the area.

"A fire engine was also set alight," he said.

"Most of the equipment in the fire engine was removed by the protesters and some of the equipment was burnt," Mulaudzi said.

Only some of the equipment in the fire engine could be salvaged.

The EMS was extremely shocked by the incident.

"These are the people who are supposed to be protecting us when we render emergency services in their communities," Mulaudzi said.

He called on all those with information which could assist police in making an arrest to come forward.
