Johannesburg - The Front National Party is getting behind Afrikaans singer Sunette Bridges to defend the statue of Paul Kruger in Church Square, Pretoria.

According to the City Press the controversial Bridges plans to chain herself to the statue on Wednesday morning after the ANC Youth League called for its removal.

“This act of defiance is a call for unity of all like-minded individuals and groups to resist any further acts of vandalism or intention of removal of national heritage sites and symbols,” Front National said on Tuesday.

“Front National will be there to chain ourselves to the statue as well and we call on all our supporters to be at Church Square at 08:30am on Wednesday.”

Protests are also reportedly planned at the statue of Jan van Riebeeck in Cape Town and the Paul Kruger statue in Rustenburg, Front National said.

On Twitter, Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr also confirmed his attendance at the Church Square protest.

The statue of Kruger in Pretoria was defaced with green paint on Monday.

The FF Plus laid charges against the EFF after the latter admitted to being behind the defacing of the statue.

The EFF also claimed responsibility for vandalising the horse memorial in Port Elizabeth, saying it was part of a campaign to remove colonial statues, News24 reported.

The bronze statue of a soldier kneeling while holding a bucket up for his horse to drink from was removed.

The soldier was pulled off the base but the horse was still standing.

Meanwhile, Red October – which says it is a “movement dedicated to raising awareness about the inhumane slaughter and oppression of the white ethnic minority in South Africa” – has started a petition to protect heritage sites and symbols.

More than 10 000 people had signed the petition at the time of publication.
