Willowvale - Pupils protesting in the Mpozolo township in Mendu Village, Willowvale, allegedly set their school alight and burnt it to the ground on Monday.

Mpolozo Senior Secondary School pupils were protesting about the school buildings that needed renovations, saying that their concerns were being neglected and ignored by the education authorities.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha, said the school's inspector was called to address the learners, but they allegedly pelted the vehicle of the school inspector with stones.

"The fire destroyed all the books and equipment and other documents and the damage is estimated to be in excess of R1m," he said.

Manatha said the school management reported the incident to the police and a case of arson was opened.

He said a second case of malicious damage to property was also opened in connection to the damaged vehicle. No arrests have been made in either case.

Butterworth station commander Colonel Sipho Hokwana appealed to the pupils not to resort to violence or vandalising and destroying public property when raising their concerns.
