OPPOSITION parties have stood their ground insisting that alternative office space should be found for the public protector should the council not renew the current lease.

In a recent Msunduzi executive council (Exco) meeting it was recommended that the committee not renew the lease agreement of Thuli Madonsela’s local office in Mkondeni Market Block.

However DA Exco member Bill Lambert said he was “astonished” at the municipality’s decision.

“Surely if we cannot accommodate the public protector at the market then we should find her … alternative office space within the municipality,” said Lambert.

Lambert further highlighted the importance of having a public protector’s office in the capital city.

The public protector occupied five offices in the Mkondeni Market block.

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi agreed with Lambert’s comments and amended the recommendation to mandate the deputy municipal manager to find suitable alternate premises for the public protector.

The council said the non-renewal of the lease at the market is to ensure that the offices are only used by its own employees. In the Exco meeting it was noted that the human settlements sub-unit have 30 staff and are experiencing a shortage of office space “to a point where some staff are currently using the boardroom as their office”
