Public meetings on holidays to start

2012-06-21 07:42

Johannesburg - Public meetings on the revision of public holidays are expected to start at Durban's City Hall at 09:00 on Thursday.

The event was arranged by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

The commission had received a number of complaints and requests concerning the fact that South Africa's public holidays only acknowledged Christianity and "discriminated unfairly" against other religions, Beeld newspaper reported.

The aim of the meetings was to collate information to determine whether the current situation was discriminatory.

The meetings would also take place in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State at a later stage.

Cancel all religious holidays and lets meet and discuss more important matters. What the F

As a Christian I can live with less 'christian' holidays. However, don't think that means we will be more productive. All that will happen is that we will be celebrating "Zipper Zuma" day and "Juju" day (please noooo.) Once you open the door to added religious holidays there will be chaos. Who's holidays? Who determines this? etc.

      Johan - 2012-06-21 09:01

Then scrap ALL public holidays - just give everyone more leave.

      Ralph - 2012-06-21 09:01

      All two of them?

      jason.children - 2012-06-21 09:02

I cant help feeling a little pissed at this!!! What would be said in Iran or Iraq if Christians wanted Christian holidays recognized!! South Africa is a Christian country supposedly run on Christian values! If you chose to live here then thats just the way it is!!! Having said all that we have way too many holidays! not good for productivity!

      Johan - 2012-06-21 09:07

Jason, I don't see SA as a Christian country. And last time I checked our constitution guaranteed freedom of religion.

@Janine im not going to get drawn into a religious debate as im not a practicing Christian, however i seem to remember saying the lords prayer every morning at school. and 90% of schools were like that! The lords prayer was said in the army, on parade in the Police force! All im saying is this would not even be entertained in a muslim or Jewish country! They would tell the Christians to get knotted. Fact!

Of course it's discriminatory. I'm a Christian and even I can see that. There are too many public holidays and they are badly timed. Make one public holiday on the last Monday of every month so that we all get a long weekend, call them just "Public Holidays" so they don't offend anyone, and if anyone wants to celebrate any other occasion let them take leave from work.

  • Allan - 2012-06-21 08:01

With 40% of the country on permanent public holiday should the focus not be on creating employment and not on seeing how to give the employed a day off every now and again in the name of whatever?

  • damonsb - 2012-06-21 08:07

What the hell, they grew up in south Africa ,and all these years, they had their fair share of everything this country has given them, now their old and ruthless. When their gone, their kids will be left with nothing. Just allot of money and no love to spend it on. Get a life you all. it’s just plain unfair that we all can’t be at these stupid meetings

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-06-21 08:14

Just stop those ridiculous pictures of 'snow in December' during christmas and we will all be happy.

  • Ralph - 2012-06-21 09:00

Commerce will never permit the demise of Christmas or Easter. It is commerce that keeps these holidays going - not the church. The day of Ascension was removed because it had no real commercial value, it was seen as just a holiday. Admittedly a small percentage of people went to church. There are 7 ANC holidays. Human Rights Day, Freedom Day, Workers'Day, Youth Day, Women's Day,Heritage Day, Day of Reconciliation. None have any commercial value. It is obvious, therefore, which days should go.

Thank you for voicing what we all are thinking :)

      zamani.myende - 2012-06-21 09:44

Workers day and heritage day r not ANC holidays. Review your knowledge beot!

  • jonodup - 2012-06-21 09:13

I say give us the Muslim, Hindu and Jewish holidays also. That should keep everyone happy.

      Johan - 2012-06-21 09:33

Why stop there. Let's also make Friday a holiday (like it is in the Muslim countries), as well as Saturday (like it is in Israel). That makes every weekend a long weekend!

  • makesuthink - 2012-06-21 09:35

There is one "Religious Holiday" that everybody forgets about. It is not celebrated by Muslim Jewish or Hindu faith, only Christians do and they have it wrong. Look at any calendar,Sunday is the first day of the week not the Seventh and the Bible states that GOD rested on the Seventh day which is Saturday. I suggest that all Public holiday be scrapped and that all Religios holidays be celebrated by the followers of that religion without having to put in for leave. EG Christian run shops/businesses close on their Religious holidays Jewish shops on theirs, Muslim shops on theirs etc. Since other holidays are also discriminating against some people (Why Womens Day where is Mens Day { women want equality in work etc, then they must be treated the same, nothing special}) all holidays to be scrapped and make annual leave a week longer

  • Homith - 2012-06-21 09:47

as a proud Hindu myself, I think that this is just nonsense !There are far more important issues that need to be sorted than worrying about whose off work when ! We still benefit from the Christian holidays, so why complain ??? Take your leave and be done with it !
