Pretoria - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela released six reports on Wednesday following investigations by her office.

"It is the beginning of the fiscal year and a month of new beginnings," Madonsela told reporters in Pretoria.

"This is the time to reflect on what went well and what went wrong in the last year."

The first report related to an investigation into an alleged incorrect calculation of the pension benefits of a former Eastern Cape education department employee.

Madonsela said the department claimed it received the cheque for the woman, now older than 70, and mailed it to her.

However, it mailed the cheque to an address not given by the woman. She had also not lived at that address.

Madonsela said she found the department had acted improperly.

"[The woman] is owed her outstanding pension money," she said.

"It can't take 14 years to decide whether the [woman] is owed the money."

The protector gave the department 30 days to pay the money, with interest.
