Pupil assaults teacher over cellphone

2012-04-26 10:19

Johannesburg - A 19-year-old matriculant from Imbali outside Pietermaritzburg has been arrested for hitting his teacher with a desk plank, according to a report on Thursday.

The Witness reported that the pupil had assaulted his teacher after an argument over a cellphone.

His cellphone had been confiscated on Monday and he was demanding it back when he got angry and attacked the teacher.

The school did not allow cellphones on its premises, the publication said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan told the newspaper the boy was in custody and was due to appear in court on Thursday.

  • JohhnyBGood - 2012-04-26 10:23

The boy ? Excuse, at 19 you are no longer a boy.

      2zbunu - 2012-04-26 11:25

Point of correction JohnnyBGood in African society if you are under 21yrs still at school living with ur parent(s) u r still a boy. Even @ school u r still a boy infront of the other boys. Unless u r one of those independent boys who turn to be man @ early age because of various reaons, which I cannot count here.

      Tuco - 2012-04-26 11:39

No corporal punishment here. He needs to be beat up like a man. won't be surprised if he had a beard

      Elize - 2012-04-26 12:16

@2zbunu the adult age has been dropped from 21 to 18 a few years ago.

      Hermann - 2012-04-26 14:14

Why care Johnny it is but only a manifestation of what has become of society since the liberals took over. Of course none of them will now raise their voices.

      Hermann - 2012-04-26 14:16

@2zbunu - I agree even Malema is still a boy in a youth league. Eat your heart out.

      Lyndatjie - 2012-04-26 16:40

@2zbunu - now while I respect culture - you need to remember that in the eyes of the law this young man can drive, have legal sex and vote. I know of NO "boy" who has that type of rights with ZERO accountability... Now while he has to go through certain rights of passage in order to become a man - he can and will be tried in the eyes of the law as an adult. And only a psychopath will get so angry and not getting his own way by resorting to violence in order to resolve it. Either which way - this is NOT the kind of "boy" I would like to see running loose in society.

      skootzie - 2012-05-16 10:29

// The boy ? Excuse, at 19 you are no longer a boy. // I see no adult behaviour from him, he behaved like an unruly and spoilt child.

  • Bryan - 2012-04-26 10:26

19 year old boy?? Probably still in grade 10 as well..!!!

      Bryan - 2012-04-26 10:26

      Oops, sorry.... matriculant, my bad!!

      Kala - 2012-04-26 10:38

Bryan - You were probably right that he was Grade 10

      alansmartSnr - 2012-05-10 20:26

..Well look at Zuma..grade 5 can you believe it.. but he probably cript of the guy next to him cos I would guess he's a grade 3. The saying "Die vader in die hemel ryk, deel sy gawes ongelyk. Vir sommige gee hy silwer en vir ander gee hy slyk" - comes to mind

  • Wimpie.Haefele - 2012-04-26 10:26

Let him face the full punishment as an adult

      richard.hipkin - 2012-04-26 13:03

      He is an adult..

  • Msika - 2012-04-26 10:26

What has got into these Teenagers? They are in the papers for all sorts of wrong reasons these days, rape, assault, house braking, murder.

      retha.marais - 2012-04-26 11:08

Long time ago, when there was a thing called punishment, we had respect for other people. Now kids know that they can get away with everything. They can even sue their parents if they get a "klap" So respect is down the drain for todays kids, they don't know the meaning of it. They don't know right from wrong because we as adults don't teach it to them. Can we blame them?

      watsongeorgejan - 2012-04-26 11:16

Spare the rod and spoil the child i say. Y'know i went to school in the former Bophuthatswana and you wouldn't dare raise a finger at your teacher because you knew that should they call in the Bop cops you'd wish you weren't born. Now look at how well our generation has turned out.

      E=MC2 - 2012-04-26 11:24

its not the teenagers... its how the parents raise them thats the problem!

  • Zimbobwe - 2012-04-26 10:35

I would rather have a 19yr old boy in school than him roaming around the suburbs and farms raping, torturing and killing people. As for his behaviuor he must learn and be a better person.

      Kala - 2012-04-26 10:40

From this article it would appear that they behave no better when in school than when they're on the street. Its just that in school the teachers are the victims

      DanielsDenzil - 2012-04-26 10:45

So in return, you have an adult in school, hitting and abusing teachers?

      Zimbobwe - 2012-04-26 10:49

So Daniel what is your solution???

      Tanie - 2012-04-26 11:36

You can't be right zim, just like the waterkloof 4.Savages.

      Stille - 2012-04-26 11:46

@zim - the answer is stop passing idiots in school, kick them out after a certian age and beat the snot out of them if they are like this gem.

      Zimbobwe - 2012-04-26 15:05

My solution is I will keep him in school and encourage him to be a better person. If you kick him out you are adding to the scumbag population we already have roaming around motherland.

      skootzie - 2012-05-16 11:45

// So Daniel what is your solution??? // Bring back corporal punishment, and one year compulsory military service (the latter might not work here though; not sure of the discipline of SADF soldiers).

  • Andrew - 2012-04-26 10:40

Take note where this took place!!!!

      Msika - 2012-04-26 10:48

      Bill - 2012-04-26 11:13

      And your point is???

      retha.marais - 2012-04-26 11:16

      Do you have children Andrew?

      E=MC2 - 2012-04-26 11:26

Andrew - my thoughts exactly!! KZN once again making headlines!

      richard.hipkin - 2012-04-26 13:04

@E=MC2, hardly headlines now is it? Drama queen.

  • Gieljam - 2012-04-26 10:40

Frequency of assault cases on teachers an pupils are on the increase Juvenile delinquency rife and no respect for seniors or other people ..then with role models such as the so to speak defunct ancyl leader this can be expected..

  • Marion - 2012-04-26 10:44

Hope the teacher recovers soon. A learner at my son's school, who was found with drugs, assaulted the teacher who called his parents so badly that he spent about 3 months in hospital and is now having seizures in class.

      Aphiwe - 2012-04-26 10:55

Really Eben??? 'Hi 5 to that kid'? U're an as& dude.

      skootzie - 2012-05-16 11:54

I remember before CP was removed, some new kid came to our school; one day the teacher asked him where his homework was, the student replied "I don't have to do anything you say, f-off." .. that student was bent over (in front of the class) and given 15 solid lashings. A few hours later the boys parents came a-running, fury written all over their faces. According to the teacher who lashed the kid, the parents wanted to sue the school for abusing their child; the principal told them that they came from a country without CP but it was still in effect here and if they didn't like it they could take their kid and f-off (I love that principal, really I do). Funny though, the kid stayed in the school, lol. He never (not once) was cheeky to the teachers again and always did his homework. Moral of the story? CP works. Bring it back!

  • Rerrits - 2012-04-26 10:46

I'm sure this \Boy\ will one day be happy working in the ranks of the Union Buildings or even in the Youth League!

      Msika - 2012-04-26 12:07

No ways, the "kid" doesn't posses the qualities that could qualify him within those ranks. [1]he didnt try to bribe the teacher, [2] didnt try to speak his way out by lying. With his rage and violence he could make a perfect mageza(Taxi driver).

      Elize - 2012-04-26 12:21

      Love it Msika!!

  • Piet - 2012-04-26 10:51

suspend him for life... HOPE HE GETS JAILTIME!!!!

  • Loo - 2012-04-26 10:55

Was the pupil expecting an important call ??? :)

      Loo - 2012-04-26 13:47

Im sure he was expecting Malema to phone to find out where the next "Kill the Boer" party is .... sure fits the mentality

  • Lerato - 2012-04-26 11:02

Most likely he is the father of those kids that were dumped on that gogo who is now suicidal. Make him look for a job and look after his kids

  • Smiley - 2012-04-26 11:10

Hahaha, Confiscated since Monday? The stupid boy probably wanted to check his social network inboxes. Oh! wait and his porn... wait, wait and he needed to text his GF and Finday he's writing a test and needs to use it as a calculator. Oh! and since he lives outside Pietermaritzburg, he needs to use it as a GPS coordinator to find home on Google maps. Hahaha.

  • Gogs Lombard - 2012-04-26 11:14

I hope this story receives a lot of attention across all media. This kid needs to be made aware of his actions and learn accountability before he really hurts someone.

      Gert - 2012-04-26 12:46

He has already hurt somebody. Say the teacher is to loose an eye or something -how do you help this teacher? They must deploy the army in schools if some of the students are over 18.

  • Shirley - 2012-04-26 11:24

Barbarians commiting barbaric acts! They deserve barbaric punishment!

      Zambezi - 2012-04-26 11:28

Send them back to Barbaria !

  • E=MC2 - 2012-04-26 11:27

Spoilt brat! Him AND his parents deserve a flat hand against the ear!

      Dazz - 2012-04-26 12:06

you probably deserve a steel baseball bat "against" your head.

  • moshebankx.khoza - 2012-04-26 11:28

I am very aware that the sch0ol did n0t allow cellphone's bt in most case's teacher's mislead our youth they brng their cellphone's in clas during lesson's

      Shirley - 2012-04-26 12:01

The teacher is and adult-who has earned his position, the student is just that a student-however in this case a tsotsi!

      Marion - 2012-04-26 12:14

@moshebankx - agree that teachers shouldn't have cellphones in class. That is no excuse to assault a teacher. At my son's school cellphones, mp3/4's etc., are not permitted. Anyone caught using them has the phone confiscated until the end of the year. We never had cellphones when I was in school. Why should it be okay now?

      Elize - 2012-04-26 12:26

So moshebankxx.khoza if the teachers is sexually active, you as the learners can also become sexually active?? just a thought.

  • Schmee - 2012-04-26 11:31

It just seems that there are so many kids out of control nowadays. I think more parents should be on birth control. Definitely would put me off from having kids.

  • Dennis - 2012-04-26 12:14

    W T F is a desk plank ??

      Gert - 2012-04-26 12:33

Since the arms deal spending there is no money for proper furniture for class rooms and the desk tops are sometimes loose or they fit any piece of wood over the steel frame. If it is loose it is a handy teacher basher plank. You must see the state of furniture in some Gauteng schools and then the ministers drive around in multi million rand vehicles. They really don't look after their own kind and the masses are just used as voting fools for their luscious and splendid life styles.

      Zambezi - 2012-04-26 13:05

Is possibly what ur brain is also made of !

  • Noreen - 2012-04-26 12:27

Yes, blame the pupil, what did the teacher do - you never hear that side of the story - I have been called to the school on 2 occasions this year both were initiated by the teacher and what happended to the teacher - nothing!!!

  • Bernice - 2012-04-26 12:30

I rest my case with these types of issues. Our children are allowed to get away with everything, they dont respect there parents so why should they respect the person who is trying to give them an education. The basic education begins at home and they carry these attitudes to the classroom. NO DISCIPLINE

  • Jack - 2012-04-26 12:37

He wanted to watch a viral video hahahah

  • Thabang - 2012-04-26 12:37

lets face facts now, always "BOYS" make headlines, that simply min sumthing is wrong either we dnt care about them or myb they want attention, now that they have it let us show them the way of life,we care and if you care for sumthing u put it away in a safe place for a long time, our justice system must do sumthing they must be punished not the other way round,i min we have brothers 4 life, they advitise on tv everyday evry day tlk abwt respect, love, leadership, grls follow .but boys they dnt want to follow in the mean time they want to lid....GOD have mercy

  • William - 2012-04-26 13:05

he must be expelled frm school.

  • Arthur - 2012-04-26 13:13

Must be thick as a plank if he's still in school at age 19.

  • Bob - 2012-04-26 14:21

How the hell do you refer to a 19 year old as a "boy"? He is a man!

  • adrian.marais - 2012-04-26 16:20

I can see martic is going to be the best 5 years of his life.

  • Virginia - 2012-04-26 16:45

School is correct in banning cellphones. At 19 you are no longer a boy, you are an adult and should be punished accordingly. Also be expelled from the school.

  • Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-26 21:42

19? Uhhhh maybe he should give up on the school's clearly not working out.

  • Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-26 21:43

I know some teachers from my old high school who could've used a desk plank in the face too :)

      alansmartSnr - 2012-05-10 20:28

.Well look at Zuma..grade 5 can you believe it.. but he probably cript of the guy next to him cos I would guess he's a grade 3. The saying "Die vader in die hemel ryk, deel sy gawes ongelyk. Vir sommige gee hy silwer en vir ander gee hy slyk" - comes to mind
