Suicide attempt after alleged racist bullying

2012-11-13 09:45

Durban - A Grade 11 pupil at a top private school in KwaZulu-Natal attempted suicide after she was allegedly bullied by a racist classmate.

The 18-year-old girl was not named but TimesLive reported that she had dropped out of Hibberdene Academy and refused to go back due to the racist bullying.

Another pupil also dropped out in October and was hospitalised for stress as a result of racial taunts by the same bully, it was reported.

The Grade 11 pupil said she had been best friends with the girl before she was insulted on Facebook and in school and said she was called a “black bitch” and a “black lowlife that thought that, by having a white friend, she would be better than other blacks”.

Principal Thalia Simpson said she treated all pupils equally and that the incident was nowhere near bullying.

She said it was simply a matter of "girls not liking each other".

The Independent Schools' Association of Southern Africa looked into the matter and was satisfied that two sets of disciplinary procedures were followed in line with its guidelines.

The local education department said it would investigate.

I think the principal needs a wake-up call, these words are still unacceptable, no matter if was said in a fight between the two girls! Besides, two children dropped out and was hospitalised because of this girl, that should tell you something?

  • debduplessis - 2012-11-13 09:58

Its very sad .... its happening in a well known girls school in JHB too - my daughter is suffering severely for having a black and colour friend too! its seems as those the younger generations are being taught by the uneducated parents that a rainbow nation is not what is needed BUT a segregation appears to be surfacing which is being learned in the school environment & the hate the Political Leadership openly displays have for other groupings which is not their own preference

Kids can be really cruel sometimes. Admittedly we don't know the full story (IE other side), but to degrade someone from another race especially when that person tries to be friends with you and your race, is completely uncalled for. At the end of the day, it will be people like this girl (who befriended kids from another race) who makes a true difference in the world. (Even if the conflict was started by her maybe having a bad attitude or doing something wrong or whatever.) I do however, blame the parents (well, at least largely) for this. As for the girl who was victimized: I don't care what the situation around this is. We need more people like her from all races.

  • jacque.raymer - 2012-11-13 10:00

kids will be kids and girls especially tend to be over dramatic... is this really news worthy ?

  • IcemanGP - 2012-11-13 10:08

Ag shame. Racist this, racist that. I was called worse at school. It builds character.

  • stirrer.stirrer - 2012-11-13 10:08

I think principal Thalia Simpson must pull her head out of her @$$ and see what's going on in her school. The bully's parents are probably rich and influential so the kid's untouchable.

  • Gichumz - 2012-11-13 10:09

Yoh I can already see the comments that are gonna be put under this article...

  • zelda.dickson - 2012-11-13 10:12

No matter what race bullying at school should not be allowed under any circumstances. Bullies should be expelled. They are there to learn and if not interested then should not be there at all.

  • maureen.dent.10 - 2012-11-13 10:13

    Awful, close the school down.

  • janice.mcmaster.92 - 2012-11-13 10:15

Get over it already!!! Everywhere in the world is racism!!!

  • Colin Logie - 2012-11-13 10:17

wow we still get people in our country so narrow minded and so racist. why we always gotta pull the colour card. i saw this first hand in school myself and its not punished harshly enough. the principle is brought up in the same way as that bully by her reaction of a Case of them not liking each other. just imagine what the bullies parents must me like. moral values.... #lackingmuch

  • ShottaZee - 2012-11-13 10:17

I blame the parents of the bloody racist. So sad for such a young child to be involved already in such racist acts while we are trying to breed a raceless society.

  • Jane - 2012-11-13 10:17

Calling someone a black bitch at school is disgusting, and is more than girls not liking each other. The principal needs to take this more seriously. Children commit suicide because of bullying, and most times it can be prevented by expelling the bully, especially in this case, where it is the second person she bullied. I know that this happens at most schools and even work, and yes we are told it is part of growing up and being an adult, but it is awful for the person being victimised.

  • givenvon.baloyi - 2012-11-13 10:19

So much for the colour blind born frees, South Africa is doomed

  • lulama - 2012-11-13 10:22

Bullies are a scum of earth. Wonder if some school administrators understand the effects of bullying.

  • fairness.iseverything - 2012-11-13 10:23

Aaaahh. This news platform just loves these stories, don't they?

  • godesha - 2012-11-13 10:23

To the principal. If this is not racist bullying, then I don't know what is. There's no place for people like this in our country.

  • shirley.steenkamp - 2012-11-13 10:27

One has to tred carefully here. Girls are bitchy to one another period. However if the girl was targeted only because of her rac,the this must be dealt with. On the other hand, this wil get blown totally out of proportion just because the "race" has been used,so hopefully the true story will be addressed here and this wont become a "black/white race sensation.

  • blip.noodlum - 2012-11-13 10:29

Clamp down HARD on the racist. Let everyone else in the school community learn what nasty things happen to you when you make vile racist remarks like this.

  • andrew.gordon.505523 - 2012-11-13 10:31

Great, more retards to spread hatred through schools. Throw that grade 11 out of the school if she's racially abusing or any abusing other students

  • customdesign - 2012-11-13 10:32

Seems like the principals ignorance is allowing this to happen.

  • arthur.hugh - 2012-11-13 10:32

There was a girl in the USA who killed herself after being bullied recently - teachers and parents should take this a bit more seriously.

  • sbudesh1 - 2012-11-13 10:33

Being black is not a matter of pigmentation - being black is a reflection of a mental attitude. \r\nSteven Biko \r\n\r\nMerely by describing yourself as black you have started on a road towards emancipation, you have committed yourself to fight against all forces that seek to use your blackness as a stamp that marks you out as a subservient being. \r\nSteven Biko\r\n \r\nSo as a prelude whites must be made to realise that they are only human, not superior. Same with Blacks. They must be made to realise that they are also human, not inferior. \r\nSteven Biko\r\n\r\n\r\nIf we accept and acquiesce in the face of discrimination, we accept the responsibility ourselves and allow those responsible to salve their conscience by believing that they have our acceptance and concurrence. We should, therefore, protest openly everything . . . that smacks of discrimination or slander.

  • AceOfSpades - 2012-11-13 10:38

"girls not liking each other" No wonder the bully runs freely, 3 people down so far and that's all the principal can say????

  • ruan.smith.14 - 2012-11-13 10:41

Thanks news 24, here comes more racist comments!!!

  • mzakes.matabata - 2012-11-13 10:42

Wow! it all starts at home, parents are probably racist.

  • shelley.pembroke.3 - 2012-11-13 10:44

This doesn't sound like racist bullying. This sounds like this particular girl is just a b1tch who needs to be taught some manners.

  • janice.mcmaster.92 - 2012-11-13 10:47

    Thats life!

  • sb.prins1 - 2012-11-13 10:47

That don't even make sense that they can say its not bullying, bullies abuse others physically and by using words and words hurt more than any physical scar.

  • fixgig - 2012-11-13 10:47

How can it be racist if you call some one of your own race, black, when you yourself are black, Definition of racism noun [mass noun] the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races: theories of racism prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior

  • tinkerbell7 - 2012-11-13 10:52

Hello!! How can you say its not bullying! those types of names are not allowed and is extremely disrespectful! its not a case of girls not liking each other. i think these pupils are old enough to know the difference. If people are going to try ccomiit suicide because someone else doesnt like them, we would all be dead....

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-11-13 10:59

What?!?!? I should send my sister to you so she can tell you what black kids do to white kids and the teachers just turn a blind eye in the name of "keeping peace". When parents complain and want to take the situation on by the horns they are just swept aside and the incident is swept under the carpet to please the blacks cause "blacks can't do any wrong". Now I don't condone this behaviour but this is hardly worth the hype considering what I have seen and been through. Black kids do much much worse to others then this but you hardly ever read that in the news.

      lesleyb.smit - 2012-11-13 12:17

Unfortunately what you say is true! Some school staff will gloss over 'black on white' bullying which is detrimental to all, including those not on the receiving end, but spectators. Bullying from wherever it comes, must be stamped out. It does NOT go away but gathers momentum because the bully who isn't dealt with, then carries on terrorizing the weaker person and gaining 'strength' thinking they are invincible.

  • donald.perumal - 2012-11-13 11:01

@ Thalia Simpson Headteachers like you are teh reason bullying is growing in schools. Two girls have suffered at teh hands of this girl, one almost killing herself and you say,"its about girls disliking each other".What kind of omron are you?

  • Small.Mbongwa - 2012-11-13 11:12

Denial at its best>Principal Thalia Simpson said she treated all pupils equally and that the incident was nowhere near bullying. She said it was simply a matter of "girls not liking each other">Another racist in the making>

  • shandukane.moshatana - 2012-11-13 11:13

Girls not liking each other ok Principal

  • T-Doz - 2012-11-13 11:14

I went through the same thing when I was in high school. I was teased about my complexion and my classmate will tease me about my dark complexion. I ended up with a low self esteem. But commiting suicide is not the way to go.These are the things that make us stronger in life.

  • issa.kabudula - 2012-11-13 11:24

The local education department said it would investigate. The same happens to suicide bombers where a person at his own right and frustration exploded and killed himself and others - the police comes and starts investigation, arresting many in the process. Bullying when I was at school i thought that; may be poverty is the causative of it and i then realise that its fear of unknown, uninformed, lack of contentiment and foolishness makes one to tease, hit, and cause injury to someone without a proper reason. For all students out there, girls and boys who underwent this stupid torture make do, accept what they say and tell them that they are the top stupid on earth and they don't deserve life in all their colours and cultures.

  • charmaine.mcdonald2 - 2012-11-13 11:46

This is on goin at all schools and in societies as well.

  • Silas Hlahla - 2012-11-13 12:14

a tree can only bear fruits after its own kind. dont blame the child..

  • gaeleen - 2012-11-13 12:25

there is no longer any discipline of children /youth. not by parents nor schools. thank heavens my generation were disciplined - we could actually go to school and be educated. our schools were not burnt and our teachers actually taught.

  • Moi - 2012-11-13 12:34

The child is just a bully, fullstop. You'll probably find that she uses other derogatry terms for the other children she bullies, but because they aren't racial, it didn't make the news. Schools need to start making examples of these school bullies. They just keep getting away with their actions and more and more, teens are taking their lives to try and get away from all the hurt and pain these monsters cause.

  • gaeleen - 2012-11-13 12:37

The schools are rife with bullies. This makes headlines because of the racial issue but there are bullies out there who just do it to feel more powerful/important or to belittle the other person. In most of these instances the bully is actually a person with low self esteem and self worth. The bully is probably just as much in need of councelling as te victim.
