Mbombela - The Mpumalanga Department of Education has confirmed the death of a 14-year-old pupil who collapsed and died following a soccer match at his school.

Provincial department spokesperson Jasper Zwane confirmed that the pupil, whose name has not been revealed, died on Monday afternoon.

“The department was informed of the untimely passing on of a Grade 8 learner from Lowveld High School [in Mbombela] who collapsed while playing soccer and subsequently passed away at the Mopani Clinic. The name of the learner cannot be confirmed since permission to do so has not been granted by his family,” said Zwane.

Zwane said a post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

“We will await the results. The department takes this time to convey its deepest condolences to the family, school and to anyone who is directly or indirectly affected by this sad news.”

Meanwhile, arrangements have been made to offer counselling to pupils and teachers who witnessed the incident.

Mbombela police spokesperson Dawie Pretorius confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened.
