FOUR men held a Table Mountain family at gunpoint before kidnapping the terrified parents in a brazen heist during the early hours of Saturday.

But members of the Combined Action Team (CAT) managed to set the couple free and arrested three suspects in less than 60 minutes.

It is alleged that four men, armed with guns and knives, had entered a home in the Table Mountain area.

The men stole nothing from the home, but instead kidnapped a woman and her husband. It is believed the woman was in possession of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) cards and was therefore targeted by the gunmen.

After receiving the distress call, members of CAT blocked all exits from Table Mountain into Pietermaritzburg.

They received information that the vehicle was heading toward the city.

Five minutes after being alerted CAT members cornered the vehicle at the Northway Mall on Chota Motala Road.

Two of the suspects were at the ATM, withdrawing money, while another was in the vehicle keeping a watch over the couple, who were lying bound on the back seat of the vehicle. They had been stripped naked.

Members of CAT succeeded in arresting three of the four suspects, with one escaping into the graveyard.

Fifty Sassa cards, more than R10 000 in cash, firearms and other weapons were recovered.

CAT chief of operations, Nobin Karien, said a combined effort by CAT and the K9 unit saved the lives of the two victims as “these were ruthless criminals”.

“We managed to arrest three of the four suspects and we will hunt down the fourth. He can run for now but he cannot hide from CAT. We must also commend the other officers from the SAPS that play a vital role at the crime scene when duty calls,” Karien said
