R2 000 bail for mom who left kids in car

2011-12-13 12:45

Johannesburg - A 34-year-old woman who allegedly left her two children inside a locked car at shopping centre was released on R2 000 bail, police said on Tuesday.

Shelly Khumalo would return to the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on January 9, said Captain Shado Mashobane.

The woman was arrested last Thursday at the River Square Mall in Three Rivers, Vereeniging, and charged with child neglect, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

Mashobane said Khumalo arrived at the shopping centre with four children at 14:00, leaving a 6-month-old baby and 2-year-old in the car.

Car guards alerted paramedics who had to break the window of her black BMW to rescue the two severely dehydrated children who were also struggling to breathe.

Khumalo returned and allegedly hit a police officer upon seeing the broken window.

The children were rushed to Midvaal Hospital for a medical check-up and were later released to their father and grandmother.

Only R2 000? This is ridiculous! I wont even treat my dogs like this! Sick woman!

      Go - 2011-12-13 12:55

Should leave her in jail till the case is brought up in court !!! t

      procold2 - 2011-12-13 12:57

2000 is to cheap should have made her suffer, shes going to be out enjoying her self over xmas

      peter.erasmus - 2011-12-13 13:10

And this country stands against child abuse. Great work setting an example!!!

      RobertaKeeling - 2011-12-13 13:25

@cde Sganja- I believe ignorance is bliss? You must be a happy person. Just FYI - it was a magistrate's court the case was heard in, and it is presided over by a magistrate, not a judge. (And the magistrate was black in case you're wondering?)

      Chris - 2011-12-13 13:37

@Go: Jail is too kind- she should be left in a parked car till the court date!!

      RPhiri - 2011-12-13 13:45

R2000 is nothing, she still has more money to go and do more shopping and child negligence simultaneously. If that was my wife - hell 16 days of activism will come to an end on that day with a moerse clap. There are people out there struggling to have a child, but this woman has the nerve to punish the very gift other partners would love.

      naeem.essop - 2011-12-13 14:02

@Go - Remand is not necessary here, although a higher bail amount should have been set by the presiding judge. She must have a good lawyer.

      Hans - 2011-12-13 15:12

@ Chris, I agree 100% mate. Leave her in the parking lot with the windows closed and make sure it's a hot sunny day and let her feel what the fuss is all about.I am sure she would be very sorry for her actions, or at least I hope she will be sorry.

      Squeegee - 2011-12-13 15:36

This is bail - not her punishment. When she is found guilty she will be punished - then we can all complain about it being to lenient. The bail rules apply to everyone.

      mbongenia - 2011-12-14 09:17

tie her hands up and lock her back in her car

  • Piet - 2011-12-13 12:51

Welcome to the Banana republic where they are to scared to punish people.....They should take a look at how it is done in China!

  • Michelle - 2011-12-13 12:51

Now she's free to do it all over again, what with Christmas shopping and all that entails!!! Stupid bitch should be behind bars in a boiling hot cell!!

      Theresa - 2011-12-13 13:18

I wonder what her bail conditions are? Will she be allowed to load her kids in the car and go shopping?

      RPhiri - 2011-12-13 14:11

They gave this dumb heartless b!tch bail because she's not a flight risk, the courts know very well that they will find her at some shopping mall. If i was the husband I wouldn't pay her bail money! I would rather start filing for a divorce. I doubt that this is the first time that she has done this, if she can do such a heinous act in public, one can't begin to fathom what she does to the kids behind closed doors.

  • Hendrik - 2011-12-13 12:53

Bull dust with the "ALLEDGEDLY LEFT THEM IN THE CAR". Fact they were there and she was not thus = she left them in the locked car, finish and klaar. We may not know if the cop was punched or not but no doubt about the ordeal of the two smal children. Roast her....

      Nosiphom - 2011-12-13 13:45

Exactly Hendrik, it looks like our journos are so scared they would rather just say "ALLEGEDLY" even if it is a fact. She did do it, everybody knows that. She drove the car with them in it, left the car without them and locked it - nothing allegeded - it happened!

  • Shirley - 2011-12-13 12:54

This is why we have repeat offenders,no respect for the law, crime out of control-R2000.00bail for nearly killing your children??????What is wrong with the legal systemin this country? She should of stayed in jail till her case came forward! A childs life= R1000.00 cheap, disposable, replaceable. Thats the message the courts have sent!!

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2011-12-14 09:46

Have you been to a court lately? Is it fair to be clogging up an already strained legal system with ludicrous cases like this? And since when is what a person pays for bail any indication of the seriousness of the crime? Keep your self-righteousness for the real cases that make you cry...

  • Kyle - 2011-12-13 12:54

Ah so they put a price in kids lives... R2000. before I get flamed I know thats not how bail works, she's obviously not a flight risk so they have no reason to hold her till the trial. Shame, just feel sorry for the poor kids. They have no idea that their mother did anything wrong, they'll just wanting to see her.

      Squeegee - 2011-12-13 15:38

Actually the price is far less - abortions are free. We kill millions of babies per year without an outcry from anyone.

  • Dave - 2011-12-13 13:08

She should have lost the BMW at least for the bail, that would stop her again

      CdeSganja - 2011-12-13 13:11

Dave you see now, we should take away court powers.

      Dave - 2011-12-13 13:18

Piet, why the race issue...this happens all over the world, what a stupid remark

      CdeSganja - 2011-12-13 13:19

      Piet don't be a racist.

      Lana-May - 2011-12-13 13:25

tsk tsk.... this is not about race, its about a stupid woman that doesnt deserve to be a parent...

      Bob - 2011-12-13 14:13

Sganja, your comments are stupid enough on other matters, I think you should probably stay quiet on this one, once again you might have noticed no one is in agreement with you, maybe everybody else is wrong and you are right, I somehow doubt that.

      Robsschele - 2011-12-13 17:07

The BMW is evidence. It should be locked up at a police station.

  • Angela - 2011-12-13 13:11

"Khumalo returned and allegedly hit a police officer upon seeing the broken window". Mmmmm, ok.. She values her Black BMW more than her 2 children. Lock her up in a room with no windows, no air, no food or water. Let's see how SHE likes it.

      Zinhle - 2011-12-13 15:22

She doesn't care about her gift from God (her children), the gift that not everyone has. From which part of South Africa does she come from??? Is she not aware of news, eg, a child was stolen and later his/her body recovered mutilated, body parts sold for muti purposes, etc. Is this what she wants for her own children??? I suppose they weren't hers. It's so sad. She needs a severe punishment.

      Tumelo Skhosana - 2011-12-13 17:15

This is exactly what one would expect from these so-called "black diamonds" that are recently surfacing in our country, all they're worried about is their weaves, black BMWs and shoes, their lust for money at all cost and how they look in public with no moral values at all...

      Tumelo Skhosana - 2011-12-13 17:15

      makesuthink - 2011-12-15 16:20

@ Maylani No she has not biut her man/husband has a BMW ( black mans willie) She is not worried about her children because she thinks that there is plenty more where they came from.

  • Michael - 2011-12-13 13:14

Was this a callous act and willful negligence, or just simple ignorance of possible consequences? Those among us who are parents have had the benefit of reading about other tragic cases where children left in unattended cars died in terrible circumstances, and it has now become common knowledge that the act of leaving kids in a car is a complete no-no, not to be done under any circumstances. I suggest that knowledge about the dangers be included in the standard drivers license exam as well.

      Gail - 2011-12-13 14:07

At lease yours is a constructive comment Michael.Gail

      Kyle - 2011-12-13 14:36

if you're not bright enough to know that leaving your children in a cr is bad then you are not bright enough to have cchildren.

      Rob - 2011-12-13 15:04

Dead right, crap reporting. They were in the car...fact, allegedly she left them there?????Who else could have done that?

      Rob - 2011-12-13 15:06

How about seeing the behaviour as normal, Khumalo surely thought that way. Now what does that tell you about the challenges of living in South Africa

  • vlarismam - 2011-12-13 13:22

Has this story been on TV news in ALL languages? If not, shame on SABC & eTV for not taking this opportunity to educate. That said - bail of R2,000 does makes it seem like a trivial issue...

  • Nicky - 2011-12-13 13:23

Is that all the kids lives are worth!!!

  • Hemlock - 2011-12-13 13:26

R2,000 bail ????? Disgusting! She does not deserve bail.

  • indianajohn - 2011-12-13 13:36

So killing your children is about as bad as being parked facing the wrong way about 5 times.

  • Chabie - 2011-12-13 13:38

    this is a joke right

  • Neville - 2011-12-13 13:38

The world is a very sick place when you can pay R2000 and get away with nearly killing your kids. Christmas is suppose to be a time for family you sick women.

      Hennie - 2011-12-13 14:44

Yeah , R2000 is a bribe .. Cause we have to many other cases in Court that they just can cope with..Or should we say they don't want to .??

  • Simon - 2011-12-13 13:40

And the next thing you hear is she forgot the bath water on and 4 children drowned

  • Bryan - 2011-12-13 13:43

The other day, a good friend of mine got pulled over and was literally a whisker over the alchohol limit... He was arrested, had blood taken against his will and released the next day on R5000 bail. I am not condoning drinking and driving as it's plain stupid and dangerous but looking at the context of this case...., where is the justice???

  • Lynette - 2011-12-13 13:48

It irks me beyond words that bail is set so low in this country. R 2000 for almost killing your own 2 babies, makes me sick, she should loose all custody and go to jail for attempted murder and child abuse

      Aubrey - 2011-12-13 13:55

@lynette its all about bee etc. if this had been a white woman she would have been denied bail. different strokes for different folks.

over-react much? She didn't kill anyone. She made a terrible MISTAKE.

  • Gavin - 2011-12-13 13:57

Another shining example of the punishment fitting the crime. If this had happened overseas, this piece of trash would be in protective custody, as she'd need to be protected from the wrath of the public. What a great country we live in - not.

  • Dharmesh - 2011-12-13 14:00

What the HELL is wrong with our JUSTICE SYSTEM. This woman should be WHIPPED to within an INCH of her LIFE..... Come ON SA.

      nokuthandwa - 2011-12-13 14:31

      I WINDER too?!

  • Dakey - 2011-12-13 14:02

Yes, let's throw the mother of four children in jail because she made a stupid mistake. What a wonderfull Christmas it will be for those kids. Imagine the overcrowding in our prisons if we lock up all parents who drink too much, smoke in confined spaces, don't buckle up their kids, leave the swimming pool net open, leave electical sockets unprotected or drive over the speed limit. Wouldn't be too many accidents on our roads these holidays.

      Lana-May - 2011-12-13 14:06

Stupid mistake?? That stupid mistake could've killed those kids....

      Dakey - 2011-12-13 14:20

@Lana I once came close to falling asleep at the wheel in the middle of a 4 lane highway. We just 'had' to visit my wife's family despite having had very little sleep the night before because of our crying infant. With my wife and child asleep in the car and no radio playing, the thudthudthud of cat's eye's gave me the fright of my life. That could have been it. Mrs Khumala made an ignorant mistake, but it was a mistake. It was not malicious, nor was criminal. Let's start with all those other 'more educated' parents out there who also make mistakes that could cost their children their lives.

      Lana-May - 2011-12-13 14:29

Im sorry Dakey, I just cannot stamp this as a "stupid mistake". You are allowed "stupid mistakes" when you are looking after yourself, but when there's a child involved, you cannot do something like leave your kids in a locked car, especially in SA weather and when you have an urge to splurge. And then the stupid woman hits the police for helping her children.... this is not a stupid mistake, this is a woman that is not fit to me a mother....

      Jane - 2011-12-13 14:31

Dakey why are you trying to excuse what she did? if she was so concerned about her kids welfare she would have thanked the cops and paramedics for helping her children but she didn’t. she was more worried about the broken window. That tells you where her priorities lie. She hit the cop because of the window not because she was worried about the kids. how can you leave your 6 month old and 2 year old in a locked car for that long by MISTAKE? mistake my a$$. She was just plain down lazy. All she had to do was get a trolley and take all the children with her. And all of this drama could have been avoided.

      Dakey - 2011-12-13 15:21

I'm not excusing her actions. I think having your name splashed around the country and being branded a monster is more than sufficient punishment. People do stupid things. Mrs Khumalo believed it was 'okay' to leave her children in a car for 30 minutes, it wasn't. Other people think its okay to take their children/grandchildren on a quad bike, it isn't. Others think it’s okay to put their children on a motorbike, it isn't. Some people think its okay to let their children sleep over at a friend’s house... is it? Drive around traffic and spot children that aren't buckled in. Call the police immediately and report that person. Let's splash their name on News24. C'mon, there are at least 1,000 worst cases of deliberate child neglect in this country per day. Great, this article has raised awareness of the dangers of leaving your children in a car, but are we not perhaps vilifying this woman to excuse our own inadequacies?

      Dakey - 2011-12-13 15:59

PS, why don't we start with naming the thousands of woman who elect to abort their children in South Africa every year; or does that not count towards being a pretty crappy mother?

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-12-13 16:03

I have to agree with darkey on this one, the kids are fine she F@cked up she wont do it again get over it kids are fine. worry about serious stuff i.e. real crime!!! All this has proven is when you leave kids in the car leave an adult and leave the windows open but its not going to stop a world champion boat rider from raping a kid. petty crime that could have gone bad (not on "could have") v.s a real crime that happens daily.

      Rob - 2011-12-13 17:30

Dakey: Do little to nothing and the incident is diminished, apply the same thinking to the thousands of what you call petty incidents, you minimise them even more. This poses a question: is it is important to maintain standards and principles, often at great cost for small issues. I think so because I believe that is what draws lines between civilisation and savegry.

      Dakey - 2011-12-13 19:45

@Rob I agree Rob, but is it really fair to make an example out of a mother of four, all for the benefit of the masses? Imagine you're known for the rest of your life as 'the mother that left her kids in the car', do you really not think that's sufficient punishment? I don't know too many woman that would be able to get through the entire ordeal without counciling. Point is you can see the good in people or you can see the bad in people. There is not neccesarily such a think as a good person or a bad person. Good people can do bad things and bad people can do good things. She made a bad mistake but it doesn't mean she's a bad person. She'll no doubt get community service and educated on the danger of her actions. We really don't need to make a further example out of her.

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2011-12-14 09:33

Dakey I've got to agree with you. Everyone is totally over-reacting about this and being so self-righteous. Granted her ignorance could have cost her children their lives but she's a typical harried mom of four who made a big mistake... And I think being publically ridiculed and arrested for it really is punishment enough.

      Jane - 2011-12-14 14:30

@ maylani.bezuidenhout no one is being self-righteous. I don’t think it was a mistake, just lazy parenting. Please tell me how leaving a defenceless 6 month old alone is okay? It’s so typical of a lot of South Africans to just let things like this go. Always coming up with excuses to try justify their wrongdoings. Don’t have children if you do not have the time and energy to look after them ALL the time.

  • Merven - 2011-12-13 14:02

Hemlock KAALPOOT means Just Ice system @ Maylani and Dakey so you say it is ok just to name them. Do you know for sure that there has been no physcological damage to both children. if you are a mother you would or should in her case must know ( she has 4 Children) how dangerous a high temperature is to a baby but then what do I know I ma just a concerned father. If that specimen was my wife she would become Portuguese (car loss) No car Noproblem of a child being left in a car Funny that now if you have an accident and someone dies or is hurt you are charged with murder or attempted murder How do you know that she did it by accident

  • ttrevenen - 2011-12-13 14:55

Unbelievable! How many times every year - in every country do parents do this resulting in their child's death? Punishment should be that the mother has to sit in a car in the same conditions for double the length of time - only then will she realise what she did.

  • Jimmy - 2011-12-13 15:07

Nice little slap on the wrist , tomorrow she will do the same thing , they really should have made an example of her and punished her accordingly....

  • Rob - 2011-12-13 15:09

How much does a decent pair of shoes cost? Ridiculous bail, until the Justice Department wakes up to the potential deterent effect and sets bail at levels that hurt stupidity and criminality will prevail. How much is appropriate? Difficult to know because of the extreme wealth divide in South Africa. For someone driving a car and shopping I would want to see a few months before tax income on the table, maybe R300k.
