R20m upgrade for Cape Town city hall

Cape Town - It will cost more than R20m to upgrade the Cape Town city hall, according to a report on Monday.

The Cape Argus reported that the upgrade was part of a "turnaround strategy" put in place in 2009.

Repairs to the entire roof would cost about R15m. Upgrades to the auditorium will come to about R6m, with about R2m being spent on the electrical system.

The city planned to complete the large-scale projects in the next two to three years.

Since 2009, it had completed smaller projects such as refurbishing toilets, at a cost of R1m.

The building had been in use since 1905.

And that's how you upgrade infrastructure, use what you have but maintain it... If the anc knew that then JHB and so many other places in SA wouldn't look like a dump!

is it really necessary when our people have poor infrastructure..........

Would you rather parliment collapse on people? There are budgets for the poor as much as there are budgets for maintenance of existing structures.

ask the anc and their uneccessary expenditures made at the cost that run in BILLIONS! the police rental, the rented place for the other dept. that was never used for more than 1 year that costed us a few tens of millions of rands, the R100mil and 42cents KISSING PARTY (the youth nonsense)that was WASTED! I think the Cape Town municipality by far is more accountable than what any of the anc projects could EVER be! The public protector even checked the communication tender and found R8000 irregularity! And EVEN THAT was accounted for by the DA - which made the public protector give them a clean bill! While the anc runs in the BILLIONS OF RANDS of irregular expenditure, the walls that are built at our expenses, the painting bought of all places from a McDonald's outlet! WHAT????

Rato - Let me explain. If you don't maintain it will break which leads to poor infrastructure. It's really not rocket science.

And the toilet situation still carries on. Lots of better things can be done with that amount of money.

This is great. We have to look after our architectural heritage. Built in 1905, it has the balcony where Mandela made his first public speech after being released. It is an important historical building.
